Embodiment I

[0051] A 0.3% solution comprising Magnolia extract extracted with HFA-13A (containing approximately 15% honokiol and 37% magnolol) and a tartar control system (containing tetrasodium pyrophosphate (TSPP), tripolyphosphoric acid Dentifrice formulations of sodium (STPP) and copolymer of maleic anhydride and methyl vinyl ether (GANTREZ(R) S97 liquid). Specifically, dentifrice compositions having the ingredients listed in Table I were prepared by the following method. Wetting agents, such as glycerin and sorbitol, are dispersed in the water with stirring in a conventional mixer. Weigh out the flavored oil and add the magnolia extract to the flavored oil. Add the flavor oil and magnolia mixture to the mixer along with the sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS). An anti-cavity active ingredient system with the addition of organic thickeners such as carrageenan, any salt such as sodium fluoride anticaries, and tetrasodium pyrophosphate (TSPP), sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP) and GANTREZ® liqui...

Embodiment II

[0052] By the method described above in Example I, a dentifrice formulation containing the oral composition of the present invention was prepared. However, in this example, the anti-calculus system consisted of TSPP and STPP, and no Gantrez was added to the oral composition.

Abstract

A stable and efficacious antiplaque, anticalculus, and antigingivitis oral composition is provided having an antibacterial ingredient comprising one or more active compounds found in an extract of magnolia combined with an anticalculus system comprising tetrasodium pyrophosphate (TSPP) about 1 to about 2.5% and sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP) about 1 to about 10%. The oral composition can be in the form of a mouth rinse or dentifrice, including toothpaste, gels, powders, as well as confectionaries, lozenges, and the like. Methods of making and using the oral composition are also provided.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0001] This application claims the benefit of US Provisional Patent Application Serial No. 60 / 635,352, filed December 10, 2004, the contents of which are incorporated herein by reference. Background of the invention [0002] Plaque is a soft deposit that forms on the surface of teeth. Dental plaque is generally believed to form as a by-product of bacterial growth and consists of a dense microbial layer consisting of a large number of microorganisms embedded in a polysaccharide matrix. Plaque adheres tenaciously to tooth surfaces, especially against irregular and rough surfaces, and is therefore often found on the gingival margins, in fissures in the enamel, and on the surface of developed calculus. [0003] Gingivitis is inflammation or infection of the gums and alveolar bone that support the teeth. It is generally believed that gingivitis is caused by bacteria in the oral cavity, especially bacteria that cause plaque formati...
