Embodiment 1

[0117] Preparation of hydroxy-functionalized polyvinylpyrrolidone:

[0118] Add 900ml of 2-isopropoxyethanol (about 813.6g, 7.812mol, Aldrich Chemical Company), 30mol of freshly distilled NVP (about 31.35g, 0.282 mol) and AIBN (0.317g, 1.930mmol). The solution in the flask was bubbled vigorously with nitrogen for one hour. The solution was then heated at 80 °C for two days under nitrogen protection. The solution was ultrafiltered with a 1000 NMWL RC membrane. Then, the solvent was removed with a rotary evaporator at 50-60 rpm. THF (100ml) was added to dissolve the product, then poured into 2000ml ether to precipitate the product. The product was dried in a vacuum oven to give 30.85 g of product. The hydroxyl functionalized PVP had a number average molecular weight (Mn) of 1357 as determined by titration.

Embodiment 2

[0120] Preparation of acid-terminated PVP:

[0121]Into a thoroughly dry 500 ml round bottom flask with nitrogen inlet and drying tube was charged 200 ml of anhydrous THF. The flask was then charged with succinic anhydride (2.00 g, 0.02 mol) and the hydroxy-functionalized polyvinylpyrrolidone of Example 1 (13.57 g, 0.010 mol). The solution in the flask was heated at reflux with stirring for 48 hours. The solution was concentrated to 100ml and poured into 2000ml ether to precipitate the product.

Embodiment 3

[0123] Preparation of vinylpyrrolidone-allyl alcohol copolymer:

[0124] Into a 1000ml three-neck flask with condenser and nitrogen inlet tube was charged 250ml of distilled water, 45.51g (409.5mmol) of freshly distilled NVP, 1.1725g (20.19mmol) of allyl alcohol and AIBN (0.47g, 2.862mmol). The solution in the flask was bubbled vigorously with nitrogen for one hour. The solution was then heated to 70°C for two days with stirring under a nitrogen blanket. The solution became viscous after heating for 1 hour. After two days, the product was recovered by freeze drying. The Mn of the product was measured by size exclusion chromatography to be 1,020,00, the Mw to be 1,355,000, and the polydispersity to be 1.327. 1 allyl alcohol was found for every 100 vinylpyrrolidone units.

Abstract

Packaging systems for storing ophthalmic devices such as contact lenses and to methods for packaging such ophthalmic devices with solutions to improve the comfort of the lenses during wear are disclosed. A packaging system includes an ophthalmic device stored in an aqueous packaging solution comprising a hydrophilic polymer having one or more nonethylenically-unsaturated carboxylic acid terminal groups.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to packaging solutions for ophthalmic devices such as contact lenses. Background technique [0002] Blister caps and glass vials are commonly used to individually package each soft contact lens sold to consumers. Saline or deionized water is commonly used to store lenses in blisters, as described in various patents dealing with the packaging or production of contact lenses. Because lens materials may be prone to sticking to themselves or to the lens packaging, blister packaging solutions are sometimes formulated to reduce or eliminate lens folding and sticking. For this reason, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) has been used in contact lens packaging solutions. [0003] If the lenses are washed thoroughly before wearing, the tear fluid will fully wet the lenses. In addition, difficulties in incorporating surfactants into packaging solutions, including possible reduced shelf life and / or adverse reactions during heat disi...
