[0022] The present invention provides a thermal management assembly comprising a bulk graphene material and a metal-based coating disposed on the surface of the graphene layer. Metal-based coatings include materials that react with graphene to form carbides. Metal-based coatings provide an interface with bulk graphene allowing excellent thermal conductivity and low thermal resistance. The thermal management assembly may include a structure including a bulk graphene core with a metal-based coating disposed on a surface of the bulk graphene material. In one embodiment, the thermal management assembly includes a metal-based coating disposed between a bulk graphene core material and an outer metal or ceramic substrate.

Abstract

A thermal management assembly comprising a bulk graphene material and a metal-based coating disposed on opposite sides of the bulk graphene material, including an agent that reacts with the graphene to form carbides. A metal-based coating can be used as the outer layer of the component or can be used to bond the graphene to other materials that encapsulate the graphene core. Metal-based coatings with reactive agents provide components that exhibit excellent thermal conductivity properties and greatly improved interfacial thermal resistance.
