Embodiment Construction

[0024] The following detailed description illustrates certain illustrative embodiments of the claimed subject matter. Other examples, features, aspects, implementations and advantages of the technology will become apparent to those skilled in the art from the description below. Accordingly, the drawings and detailed description should be regarded as illustrative in nature.

[0025] I. Vacuum chamber

[0026] A vacuum chamber may be included within a sterilization procedure or system. For example, figure 1 Reflects the disinfection system 10 shown schematically in block diagram form. It comprises a vacuum chamber 12 which has a load (pack) 14 of instruments to be sterilized therein. Chamber 12 may be formed from any material that is robust enough to handle pressures as low as between about 0.3 Torr and 3 Torr, and inert enough to avoid reacting with or absorbing any sterilant introduced therein. disinfectant. Such materials may include aluminum and stainless steel. Cha...

Abstract

A method of drying a medical instrument is disclosed. The method may include the steps of (a) opening a vacuum chamber; (b) placing the instrument into the chamber; (c) closing the chamber; (d) withdrawing a first volume of air from the chamber; (e) changing a certain volume of liquid water into vapor; (f) introducing a second volume of air into the chamber; (g) withdrawing the second volume of air from the chamber; (h) changing a second volume of liquid water into vapor; (i) introducing a third volume of air into the chamber; (j) opening the chamber; and (k) removing the instrument in a dry state from the chamber.

Description

technical field [0001] The subject matter disclosed herein relates to detecting moisture in an evacuated chamber. It can be used in particular in chemical steam sterilization techniques. Background technique [0002] Medical devices may be decontaminated prior to use in order to minimize the possibility of using, for example, a microbially contaminated device on a subject that could result in an infection of the subject. Decontamination procedures include disinfection and sterilization. In various sterilization procedures involving the introduction of a sterilant into a vacuum chamber under low pressure, residual moisture should be removed from the instrument and vacuum chamber before the sterilant is introduced into the instrument to maximize the effectiveness of the sterilization. In various sterilization procedures, residual moisture should be removed from the device after it has been immersed in a chemical bath to prevent the growth of new microorganisms on the device....
