Abstract

A technical solution for fault mitigation of current sensors for systems with permanent magnet DC drives is described. An exemplary power steering system includes a brushed motor and a motor control system that uses the brushed motor to generate an amount of torque that corresponds to a torque command. The motor control system includes a current sensor failure detector that detects a current sensor failure associated with a current sensor for measuring current across the brushed motor. The motor control system also includes a speed observer that calculates an estimated motor speed in response to a current sensor failure. The motor control system also includes a feedforward controller that generates a current command for producing an amount of torque with the brushed motor, the current command generated using the estimated motor speed. The technical solution described in this paper addresses the technical challenges of current sensor fault mitigation for PMDC-driven EPS systems.

Description

technical field [0001] The present application relates to steering systems, particularly electric power steering (EPS) systems, and more particularly to fault mitigation techniques for motor control in the event of a missing current sensor in an EPS using permanent magnet DC drive. Background technique [0002] Permanent magnet DC (PMDC) motors are widely used in motion control applications including EPS systems. Torque control of the PMDC motor drive is performed by current regulation with measured current feedback (through a current measurement circuit). Feedback current control performed in this manner provides adjustable current (and thus adjustable torque) control bandwidth characteristics, disturbance rejection, and less sensitivity to modeling uncertainties. Another advantage of using a PMDC motor drive with feedback control operation is that control does not require position or velocity measurements. It should be noted, however, that motor speed is an important sig...
