[0039] figure 1 Oxygenated blood is shown flowing into the left ventricle 208 during systole of the left atrium 206, wherein the mitral valve 222 opens, allowing oxygenated blood 226 to flow into the left ventricle 208, which expands during this portion of the cycle. The aortic valve 224 is now closed. The intracardiac device comprising the atrial component 102 and the ventricular component 104 facilitates the flow of oxygenated blood 226 through volume displacement. As the left atrium 206 empties / contracts, the atrial intracardiac device component (ICDC) 102 within the left atrium 206 expands (increases in volume). As the left ventricle 208 fills / relaxes, the ventricular ICDC 104 contracts (decreases in volume). During the next cycle portion, the expansion / contraction process is reversed, ie, the left atrium 206 expands and the left ventricle 208 contracts. In this next portion of the cycle, the aortic valve 224 will then be opened, allowing oxygenated blood 226 to flow to...

Abstract

An intra-cardiac device component (ICDC) is inserted into one to four chambers of a heart. The ICDC in the right atrium and left atrium expands while the tricuspid and mitral valves are open during the first-time epoch. The expansion in the right atrium and left atrium pushes blood from these atriums into their respective ventricles. The ICDC in the right ventricle and left ventricle contracts atthis time epoch and the pulmonary and aortic valves are closed. In the succeeding time epoch, the ICDC in the right atrium and left atrium contracts while the tricuspid and mitral valves are closed, and the right atrium and left atrium are filled with blood. The ICDC in the right ventricle and left ventricle expand in this time epoch while the pulmonary and aortic valves are open. This sequence increases the blood flowing into the pulmonary artery and aorta and helps to remedy the decreased ability to pump blood in heart failure patients.

Description

technical field [0001] Aspects of the disclosure relate generally to medicine, and more specifically to heart failure. Background technique [0002] Heart failure is a medical condition in which the heart cannot adequately pump blood to the body's organs. One of the common causes is myocardial infarction (also known as heart attack) from coronary artery disease (narrowing of blood vessels in the heart). During a myocardial infarction, part of the heart muscle disappears and the remaining heart muscle overworks and gradually stretches over time. The heart becomes enlarged, reducing its ability to pump blood. Coronary artery disease and myocardial infarction are just one of many causes of heart failure. Other causes include high blood pressure, heart valve problems, heart muscle problems (eg, viral myocarditis, amyloidosis, HIV, cardiac arrhythmias, sarcoidosis, etc.), and many others. [0003] If right heart failure is present (due to disease of the right atrium and right...
