Problems solved by technology

[0014] Prior art devices with automatic range shift activated by joystick position are not entirely satisfactory because range shift is initiated by joystick actuation of a fixed position sensor or switch, so the joystick position to initiate automatic range shift is fixed of

Embodiment Construction

[0027] A computer-assisted (i.e., microprocessor-based, controller-assisted) vehicular compound mechanical transmission system 10 can be seen by reference to FIGS. / method.

[0028] The system 10 is of the type commonly used in heavy duty vehicles, such as tractor / semi-trailer vehicles and conventional tractors, and includes an engine, typically a diesel engine 12, and a primary friction clutch 14 contained in a clutch housing. Speed compound transmission 16, and drive shaft assembly (not shown). Transmission 16 includes an output shaft 20 that is drivingly connected by a universal joint 24 to a vehicle drive shaft 22 for driving the drive shaft assembly. The transmission 16 is located in the transmission housing and the shift bracket of the shift lever assembly 30 is mounted directly on the housing. The system is equally applicable to remotely mounted shift levers, such as those used in cab-over vehicles.

Abstract

A control for enhanced shifting in a computer (48) -assisted vehicular compound transmission system having a having a main section (16A) shifted by a manually operated shift lever (31) and a range section (16B) automatically shifted in response to sensing shift lever (31) passing through a predetermined actuation point (AR) in the shift pattern. A position sensor (160) is provided for sensing the position of the shift lever and logic is provided to vary the location of the actuation point (180, 182, 184) for initiating a range shift.
