Embodiment 1
[0151] The pulverized commercial SAN polymer (composition: 73% mole styrene and 27% mole acrylonitrile) product (sieved to 16-32 mesh size) was reacted with 96% by weight sulfuric acid heated to 100°C for 30 minutes. After the reaction, the gelled product in the system was filtered through a glass filter, washed with water and filtered again. The resulting product was dried at 115° C. for 2 hours in an air circulation type dryer. The elemental analysis of sulfur showed that the sulfonic acid group accounted for 42% mole of the total monomer units. From the measured FT-IR results, it was found that the nitrile groups in the polymer had been converted into amide groups.
Embodiment 2
[0153] Treat in the same manner as in Example 1, but use a commercial ABS polymer (composition: 65 mol% styrene, 25 mol% acrylonitrile and 10 mol% butadiene) passed through a 16-32 mesh sieve React with 90% mole sulfuric acid at 100°C for 30 minutes. From the elemental analysis results of sulfur, it was found that the sulfonic acid groups in the product accounted for 48 mole percent of the total monomer units. From the measured FT-IR results, it was found that the nitrile groups in the polymer had been converted into amide groups.
Embodiment 3
[0155] The transparent part of the discarded 8 mm video tape cassette made of SAN polymer (composition: 60% mole styrene and 40% mole acrylonitrile) was pulverized into 16-32 mesh size, and made in the same manner as in Example 1 The reaction was carried out under the same conditions. The elemental analysis results of sulfur showed that the sulfonic acid group accounted for 37% mole of the total monomer units. From the measured FT-IR results, it was found that the nitrile groups in the polymer had been converted into amide groups.
