Embodiment Construction

[0130] Referring now to Figures 1A, 1B and 1C, a brief description of the normal operation of the human heart will be provided to help understand the present invention.

[0131] The heart 10 shown in FIG. 1B has four chambers, namely, the right atrium RA, the right ventricle RV, the left atrium LA, and the left ventricle LV. Venous blood returning to the heart flows into the right atrium, then into the right ventricle, and then into the lungs via the pulmonary artery PA. In the lungs the blood takes up oxygen and returns to the left atrium, as indicated by arrow 14, from here, the oxygenated blood enters the left ventricle, and then enters the aorta AO, from where it begins its journey around the body called the great circulation. The circulation from the right ventricle to the lungs and then to the left atrium is called the minor circulation.

[0132] The operation of the heart is related to electrical signals, which are shown in Figure 1AEKG. Point P represents the contr...

Abstract

An apparatus for treating a mammal or other living organism having a heart and a peripheral vascular system to achieve a heart load reduction, said organism having a pulse rate and a systolic pressure resulting from the action of the heart, the apparatus involving the steps of measuring the heart rhythm, producing pressure pulsations in the peripheral vascular system by a non-invasive or invasive method in synchronization with the heart rhythm in the counterpulsation mode and varying at least one parameter of an input system generating said pressure pulsations to produce an optimised reduction in at least one of said pulse rate and said systolic pressure and hereby a net reduction in said heart load, said heart load being a function of said pulse rate and said systolic pressure. <IMAGE>

Description

[0001] This application is a divisional application with the filing date of August 14, 2000, the application number of 00813482.0, and the title of the invention being "Method for Treating Living Body to Reduce Cardiac Load and Device for Implementing the Method". field of invention [0002] The present invention relates to a method of treating mammals, especially humans, or other living organisms having a heart and peripheral vascular system, to reduce the load on the heart. The present invention is completely different from other treatments, and also relates to a device for performing the method. Background of the invention [0003] To help understand the present invention, it is necessary to first understand how the heart works and what is known in the art. [0004] The condition of the human heart is usually measured by an electrocardiogram, for example, a representative output trajectory shown in FIG. 1 can be obtained. Basically an electrocardiogram is a record of the ...
