Adc-based mixed-mode digital phase-locked loop

A Phase-Locked Loop (PLL) includes a Phase-to-Digital Converter (PDC), a programmable digital loop filter, a Digitally-Controlled Oscillator (DCO), and a loop divider. Within the PDC, phase information is converted into a stream of digital values by a charge pump and an Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC). The stream of digital values is supplied to the digital loop filter which in turn supplies digital tuning words to the DCO. A number of types of ADCs can be used for the ADC including a continuous-time delta-sigma oversampling Digital ADC and a Successive Approximation ADC. Multi-rate digital phase locked loop

A Digital Phase-Locked Loop (DPLL) involves a Time-to-Digital Converter (TDC) that receives a DCO output signal and a reference clock and outputs a first stream of digital values. Quantization noise is reduced by clocking the TDC at a high rate. Downsampling circuitry converts the first stream into a second stream. The second stream is supplied to a phase detecting summer of the DPLL such that a control portion of the DPLL can switch at a lower rate to reduce power consumption. The DPLL is therefore referred to as a multi-rate DPLL. A third stream of digital tuning words output by the control portion is upsampled before being supplied to the DCO so that the DCO can be clocked at the higher rate, thereby reducing digital images. In a receiver application, no upsampling is performed and the DCO is clocked at the lower rate, thereby further reducing power consumption.

Digital phase locked loop device and method in wireless communication system

A digital Phase Locked Loop (PLL) in a wireless communication system is provided. The PLL includes a Digitally Controlled Oscillator (DCO), a divider, a Phase Frequency Detector (PFD), a Time to Digital Converter (TDC), a delay comparator, and a level scaler. The DCO generates a frequency signal depending on an input Digital Tuning Word (DTW). The divider divides the frequency signal at an integer ratio. The PFD generates a signal representing a phase difference between a divided frequency signal and a reference signal. The TDC measures a time interval of the phase difference using the signal representing the phase difference. The delay comparator calculates a time interval in the case where rising edges coincide from values measured by the TDC. The level scaler generates a DTW that operates the DCO using a digital code representing the time interval.

Injection locking using direct digital tuning

The invention relates to the field of electronics and more particularly to the tuning and injection locking of voltage controlled oscillators (VCOs). An improved injection locking circuit is provided which allows the VCO to injection lock with a smaller reference signal and therefore a smaller locking bandwidth (LBW). In order to allow the VCO to injection lock with a lower power reference signal, this invention includes a pre-tuning algorithm to place the VCO frequency such that the desired frequency is in the LBW. Tuning of the VCO is achieved using direct digital tuning that does not require an input reference. Injection locking is performed using a low frequency clock harmonic as the reference signal. More specifically, tuning is accomplished by sub-sampling and digitizing the output signal of the VCO, determining the center frequency, and adjusting the VCO control voltage.

System and method for programming oscillators

A system and method for programming a digitally tunable oscillator is provided. A desired output frequency is received. A tuning effect of a set of digital tuning words on a crystal resonant frequency is determined, and valid parameters of an algorithm for translating and tuning the crystal resonant frequency to a value within an error tolerance of the desired frequency, based on the determined tuning effect are calculated. Valid parameters are preferably calculated based on an intermediate tuning value, sorted by ascending divide parameter of the algorithm, and then evaluated in sorted order for ability of a tuning effect to null frequency error to within the error tolerance. The valid set of calculated parameters are then programmed into a nonvolatile memory. The oscillator control parameters may remain unprogrammed until all necessary parameters are defined. Because the device may be programmed in a single step, without intermediate presumption of nominal crystal frequency, the final plate process may be unnecessary. A high accuracy may be obtained by searching through the complete set of available parameters for a set that meets a frequency and tolerance specification. The oscillator is preferably a Cypress CY2037 device alone or in combination with a Micro Analog Systems MAS1175 device.
