A method and apparatus normalizes the playback loudness of stored sound recordings to avoid objectionable variations in perceived loudness between different sound recordings at the same volume setting. In an exemplary processing method, a stored sound recording is processed to determine its loudness. That loudness, or some value derived from it, is then used to set the playback gain used for playing back the sound recording. Thus, for a given volume setting, the playback gain can be set lower for louder recordings, and higher for quieter recordings. In one or more exemplary embodiments, sound recordings are processed as received, or at least some time in advance of their first playback, so that a loudness-based gain compensation parameter can be calculated and stored for them. The corresponding stored gain control parameter can then be selected and used responsive to selecting a particular sound recording for playback.

A broadband multibit digital radio-frequency (RF) signal is synthesized digitally. to convert the digital signal to a high-power analog signal for RF transmission. Each bit (or cluster of bits) of the digital signal is first separately amplified using a fast switching amplifier with a controlled dc power supply voltage. The DC voltages are weighted to match the significance of the bits, and controlled by a set of calibrated DC reference sources to maintain high precision. The amplified digital signals from the various bits are then combined and passed through an appropriate analog filter to generate the RF signal to be transmitted. Such a signal can exhibit broad bandwidth, high dynamic range, excellent linearity, and low noise. Preferred embodiments of this system can incorporate superconducting electronic elements. For ultimate precision, a set of primary or secondary DC voltage standards can be used to regulate the switching amplifier supply voltages.

An audio amplification circuit may include an input terminal for receipt of an input signal from a transducer. A signal processor may be coupled to the input terminal for receipt and processing of the input signal to generate a processed digital audio signal in accordance with a programmable configuration setting of the signal processor. A serial data transmission interface is configured for receipt of the processed digital audio signal and supply of a corresponding digital audio stream at an output terminal of the integrated audio amplification circuit. An input signal is pre-distorted to reduce spurious emissions resulting from subsequent signal amplification. Frequency-dependent pre-distortion is preferably implemented in combination with frequency-independent pre-distortion, where the frequency-dependent pre-distortion corresponds to amplifier distortion that has a magnitude that is proportional to the frequency offset from the carrier frequency and a ±90° phase shift on either side of the carrier frequency. The frequency-dependent pre-distortion is generated by differentiating waveforms corresponding to two different sets of pre-distortion parameters with respect to time. In one embodiment, one of the differentiated waveforms is applied to a positive-frequency filter and the other to a negative-frequency filter to generate positive- and negative-frequency pre-distortion signals, respectively, to account for asymmetries in the amplifier characteristics. In another embodiment, only one of the differentiated waveforms is applied to an asymmetric filter (i.e., either a positive-frequency filter or a negative-frequency filter).

A volume control system comprises: an amplifying apparatus; and a controller connectable to the amplifying apparatus. The amplifying apparatus includes; a first receiving section for receiving a volume value from the controller, a first input section into which an instruction for changing the volume value is input by a user's operation, a first transmitting section for transmitting the volume value input into the first input section to the controller, and a volume control section for, when the first receiving section receives the volume value or the changed volume value is input into the first input section, controlling a volume value of the amplifying apparatus based on the volume value. The controller includes; a display section for displaying the volume value on a display device, a second receiving section for receiving the volume value from the amplifying apparatus, a changing section for changing the volume value to be displayed on the display device by the display section into the volume value received by the second receiving section; a second input section into which an instruction for changing the volume value to be displayed on the display device by the display section is input by a user's operation; and a second transmitting section for, when the instruction for changing the volume value to be displayed on the display device by the display section is input by the user's operation, transmitting the changed volume value to the amplifying apparatus.

An equalization method using equal loudness curve, and a sound output apparatus using the same are disclosed. An audio signal is equalized using a standard loudness curve so as to increase a loudness of an audio signal. A sound quality can be significantly enhanced with the enhancement of a sound cleanness and quality when being adapted to a communication apparatus such as a telephone terminal, a transmitter or a repeater. A digital audio-visual receiver (10) with improved digital control of audio volume is disclosed. Upon receipt of a user volume command, via a front panel (25) or a remote control and infrared receiver (27), sequential logic (36) in a volume command processor (35) in a PWM audio processor (20) of the receiver (10) initiates a timer (38), which measures or counts a selected interval. If additional volume commands are received during the interval, sequential logic (36) resets and restarts the timer (38). Upon the timer (38) interval elapsing without another volume command, the volume command processor (35) generates a ramping volume output signal to reach the volume level of the last received volume command over a selected time duration. Audible artifacts during changes in audio volume are thus avoided.

A variable gain amplifier circuit is provided. The circuit includes an operational amplifier for amplifying and outputting an input signal according to a cutoff frequency and a gain, a feedback resistor for changing a first resistance according to a first digital control code value which determines the cutoff frequency, and an input resistor for changing a second resistance according to a second digital control code value which is determined based on a difference of the first digital control code value and a gain code value. The gain is determined by a ratio of the first resistance and the second resistance and linearly changes on a decibel (dB) basis according to the first digital control code value, the cutoff frequency is inversely proportional to the first resistance and linearly changes on a log scale, and the variable gain can be easily set using the control code.

A signal reproduced using a reproduction head is sequentially processed by an analogue filter, an A/D, and an interpolator before being supplied to a digital equalizer. The digital equalizer digitally equalizes an input digital signal to output to a subsequent Viterbi decoder, or the like. The digital equalizer comprises a variable BPF, and a variable FIR filter, and the filtering characteristic is variably adjusted.

The present invention discloses an audio device having haptic compensation function capable of compensating a haptic effect according to a power measuring result and an audio signal. An embodiment of the audio device comprises: an audio signal generating circuit operable to generate an audio signal; a power measuring circuit operable to measure a remaining electric quantity of a power source and thereby generate a power measuring result; and a haptic compensating circuit, coupled to the audio signal generating circuit and the power measuring circuit, operable to adjust a gain of the audio signal or the derived signal thereof according to the power measuring result and thereby output a haptic compensation signal which is used to compensate the haptic effect.

A receiver comprising: one or more variable gain elements; an automatic gain control (AGC) for controlling a gain of one or more of the one or more the variable gain elements; and a frame detector configured to detect the presence of a frame in a signal received by the receiver and to output a signal to the AGC on detection of a data frame, wherein the AGC is configured to estimate a signal to noise ratio (SNR) of the received signal on receiving an input signal from the frame detector, to calculate a SNR margin between the estimated SNR and a target SNR and to adjust the gain of one or more of the one or more variable gain elements to maintain a positive SNR margin such that in the event of interference with the received signal the one or more variable gain elements do not saturate.
