Medication delivery system

A medication delivery system (20) having features of the present invention comprises a medical container (26) holding a prescribed medication (27) to be delivered to a patient, a tag 24 adapted to be worn by the patient, a handheld computing device (22), and an electronic medication delivery device (30). Data on the medication (27) is contained in a first label (28) on the medication container (27). The first label (28) also contains the instruction on how the medication is delivered to the patient, including the appropriate settings for an electronic medication delivery device for delivering the medication to the patient. Patient data is contained in a second label (29) on the tag (24) worn by the patient. The medication data, medication delivery instruction, and patient data are provided in machine readable formats. The handheld computing device (22) reads the medication data and the medication delivery instruction on the medication container (26) and the patient data on the patient tag (24). The handheld computing device (22) stores the information obtained and performs a matching check to confirm that the medication data matches with the patient data. Upon a confirmed match, it transmits the medication delivery instruction to the electronic medication delivery device (30), which downloads the instruction, programs the delivery device 30, and prompts an operator to begin delivering the medication (27) to the patient according to the downloaded instruction.

Patient-controlled medical information system and method

An electronic medical record system and service is disclosed for centrally storing patients medical records electronically on a database for patient-controlled remote access by both patients and medical providers. The system stores a plurality of patient medical records on a medical information database via a medical information server connected to a network. A plurality of medical provider computers connected to the network have software to communicate with the medical information server. Patients supply authorization means to allow medical provider computers to access patient-selected portions of the patient's medical record for viewing and updating of the patient's medical record. Additionally, patients can access all portions of their medical record using browser software on any browser-enabled device connected to the network.

Intraoral Nebulizer Providing Air Curtains

An improved nebulizer places a venturi in close proximity to or inside a patient's oral cavity. One or more medicine feed lines feeds the medicine to a location proximate to a venturi. One or more air curtain conduits may be positioned near the medicine feed line and the venturi and is fed by a source of air pressure to create a curtain of fluid flow to surround at least in part the flow path of the nebulized medication. This minimizes the amount of medication lost to the oral cavity and to the trachea and permits more medication to reach a patient's lungs. Medication contained in a patients exhalant can be filtered in an exhale conduit to prevent loss to the environment and can be recaptured for reuse.

A medication dispenser comprises slots that may be sized to accommodate medication containers of various sizes. Each slot has an associated barcode reader. A user inserts the pharmacy-provided pill or medication container into one slot. The barcode on the container is read. From the barcode the medication in the container is identified. The device contains a simple user interface that allows the user to enter the dosing frequency prescribed, how many pills or cc's are in the container, how many refills and a starting time. The dispenser alerts users to possible drug interactions with medications in other slots as well as alerts them to dosing times and other pertinent information.

Nebulizer mouthpiece for reducing drug loss

A method for reducing a loss of medication from a nebulizer includes the steps of entraining a liquid medication into a first flow of a pressurized gas into a nebulizer chamber and also entraining an additional amount of the liquid medication into a second flow of ambient air drawn into the nebulizer chamber through an opening when a patient inhales through the nebulizer chamber. When the patient exhales, a portion of the exhaled breath is directed into the outlet of the nebulizer chamber, thereby increasing a backpressure within the outlet and substantially stopping the second flow of ambient air into the nebulizer chamber, thereby decreasing the amount of medication lost to the ambient environment while the patient is not inhaling.

Apparatuses and methods for medication administration

Apparatuses and methods for medication administration via a body cavity. In one aspect, a medication administration device includes: a tip portion having a plurality of holes and a balloon defining a balloon cavity. When the balloon is deflated the tip portion can be inserted into a body cavity, such as rectum, to allow medication delivery through the holes in the tip portion. When inflated, the balloon can prevent the tip portion from being withdrawn from the body cavity and / or hold dispersed medication within the body cavity. The device further includes a port portion that has a first port and a second port, and an elongated tubular portion that is coupled between the tip portion and the port portion. The tubular portion has a first lumen connecting the first port to the plurality of holes in the tip portion, and a second lumen connecting the second port to the balloon cavity.

Prescription bottle indication add-ons to reduce medication errors

InactiveUS20120285366A1Reduce Medication ErrorsImprove patient safetyStampsMeasurement devicesVisually impairedCrowds
Label add-ons for decreasing medication errors and associated fatalities in the pharmacy dispensing process and for indicating the intended use of a drug in people ranging from the blind to the sighted, consisting of a circular, hollow, semi-flexible, ring-like material that is attached onto a prescription bottle. This invention serves as a vital safety-tool to the pharmacy dispensing process where duplicate medications become easily detected by the pharmacy personnel if device is properly attached to the prescription bottle. Imprinted, raised, or engraved legend in grapheme positioned over the outer surface of the device informs the reader the drug indication. Raised Braille coding and raised or engraved grapheme characters become vital in assisting the blind and visually impaired in identifying the drug through their sense of touch. Other distinctive features such as color, markings, and messages to uplift the mood on the apparatus, can further assist individuals in recognizing the correct drug indication. The apparatus can be reused from one prescription to the next if a patient desires a drug-refill.

Back strengthening and therapy device

A back strengthening and therapy device has a frame with two body encircling frame members, each frame member having a front end and a rear end. A handle is located on the front end of each of the frame members and a back impacting element is located at the rear end of each frame member. An expandable, cross member interconnects the frame members. When this cross member is locked, the user can conveniently position the back impacting elements on his or her back and apply selected pressure to the back by manipulating the handles and the back impacting elements. When this cross member is unlocked, allowing the elastic to expand, the user can pull backward, creating resistance, in a repeated motion, for purposes of strengthening the back.
