Embodiment 1

[0052] Figure 1 schematically depicts an embodiment of the apparatus of the invention for carrying out the method of the invention. However, other configurations are also possible. This apparatus is also schematically depicted in Fig. 2a (this Fig. 2a also schematically depicts an embodiment of the method of the invention).

[0053]Liquid influent 1 is fed into reactor 3 through liquid inlets for containing BOD, ammonium, magnesium, phosphate and biomass. Alternatively, one or more of said Substances can be fed separately into the reactor (not shown in Figure 1). By way of example, organisms can be added to liquid 1 , but organisms can also be present in reactor 3 and / or added to reactor 3 during the process. The liquid influent typically contains BOD, ammonium and phosphate. Additional phosphate or ammonium can be added to liquid 1 before entering reactor 3 or directly into reactor 3. It can be added in the form of a solid substance or dissolved or dispersed in, for exam...

Embodiment 2

[0061] Figure 2a schematically depicts the apparatus and method of the present invention (as described in Example 1), and Figure 2b schematically depicts an embodiment with possible additional reactors or process steps, which are described further below.

[0062] For example, the apparatus of Example 1 may additionally comprise a reactor 21 in which stream 20 (containing BOD which may be treated anaerobically and aerobically) is anaerobically treated in reactor 21 to provide stream 1 (containing Less BOD) and biogas or methane 22 than before treatment in reactor 21. Liquid stream 20 may be the same as liquid stream 1 of Example 1. Stream 20 now goes further into reactor 3 like stream 1 (cf. further Example 1). Part of the liquid effluent from reactor 3 can be fed via line 6 into reactor 25 (eg autotrophic nitrogen removal in biofilms (Canon, see above). Furthermore, part of the ammonia-containing gas from reactor 3 can be fed into reactor 25 via line 7 . Here, ammonium is t...

Embodiment 3

[0064] This example describes the combination of a digester plant with a reactor according to the invention. Digester plants used to digest biomass produce a wastewater stream containing BOD, ammonium, and phosphate. The waste water stream is fed into the reactor of the invention and the method of the invention is applied, eg as a continuous process. At least partial removal of BOD, ammonium and phosphate. It is also possible to remove part of the remaining ammonium (after the method of the invention) in a subsequent reaction with anammox bacteria (eg anammox, autotrophic denitrification in biofilms).

Abstract

The invention is directed a process for the simultaneous removal of BOD and phosphate from a liquid containing ammonium, BOD, phosphate and magnesium, the method comprising: feeding the liquid to a reactor containing BOD-oxidising biomass; ensuring that the liquid in the reactor contains an excess to stoichiometry of ammonium and magnesium relative to phosphate, wherein the stoichiometry is related to the stoichiometry of struvite; oxidising at least part of the BOD; adjusting the pH of the liquid in the reactor at a desired value; forming solid material in the reactor, the solid material comprising struvite; separating at least part of the solid material comprising struvite from the reactor effluent; returning a part of the solid material to the reactor. The invention is also directed to a reactor for this process. The advantage of the process and the apparatus is that in one reactor both BOD and phosphate are removed from the liquid.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a method for the simultaneous removal of BOD and phosphate from a liquid containing ammonium, biological oxygen demand (BOD) and phosphate and a device for this method. Background technique [0002] Phosphate-contaminated wastewater is generated in municipal and industrial water, and phosphate removal technology can be applied to treat wastewater. Conventional methods are based on the immobilization of activated sludge or on the precipitation of phosphates based on calcium or iron salts. The latter method produces considerable amounts of water-rich sludge, which needs to be disposed of at ever-increasing costs. To minimize disposal costs, sludge is usually dewatered mechanically prior to disposal. Typically even after dewatering, the water content of the sludge is still 60% to 85%, and a considerable part of the treatment cost comes from expensive water treatment. The high water content and low quality of waste sludg...
