[0012] The process of the invention is particularly useful for the production of xylenes from hydrocarbon feedstocks. A suitable hydrocarbon feedstock boils in the range of 149°C (300°F) to 399°C (750°F) and preferably contains at least 50 volume percent aromatics. A particularly preferred feedstock comprises at least part of light cycle oil (LCO), which is a by-product of the fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) process. LCO is an economical and convenient feedstock because LCO is not desired as an end product and it contains large amounts of sulfur, nitrogen and polynuclear aromatic compounds. Thus, the present invention enables the conversion of low value LCO streams to valuable xylene hydrocarbon compounds.
