Embodiment Construction

[0012] The process of the invention is particularly useful for the production of xylenes from hydrocarbon feedstocks. A suitable hydrocarbon feedstock boils in the range of 149°C (300°F) to 399°C (750°F) and preferably contains at least 50 volume percent aromatics. A particularly preferred feedstock comprises at least part of light cycle oil (LCO), which is a by-product of the fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) process. LCO is an economical and convenient feedstock because LCO is not desired as an end product and it contains large amounts of sulfur, nitrogen and polynuclear aromatic compounds. Thus, the present invention enables the conversion of low value LCO streams to valuable xylene hydrocarbon compounds.

[0013] In a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the selected feedstock is first introduced into the denitrogenation and desulfurization reaction zone together with hydrogen under the hydrotreating reaction conditions. Preferred denitrogenation and desulfurizati...

Abstract

A process for the conversion of a hydrocarbon feedstock to produce xylene compounds. The feedstock is selectively hydrocracked and introduced into a transalkylation zone with a hydrocarbonaceous stream rich in benzene, toluene and C9+ plus hydrocarbons.

Description

Background of the invention [0001] The present invention relates to a process for converting hydrocarbon feedstocks to produce xylene compounds. More specifically, the present invention relates to the selective hydrocracking of aromatic compounds contained in a hydrocarbon feedstock followed by immediate transalkylation of the hydrocracking zone effluent and benzene and toluene rich hydrocarbon streams to produce xylenes. [0002] Xylene isomers are produced on a large scale from petroleum as feedstocks for a variety of important chemicals. The most important xylene isomer is para-xylene, used in the main raw material of polyester, which continues to enjoy high growth rate due to high base demand. Ortho-xylene is used to produce phthalic anhydride, which has a high-volume but mature market. Meta-xylene is used in lower volume but growing products such as plasticizers, azo dyes and wood preservatives. Ethylbenzene is generally found in xylene mixtures and is sometimes recycl...
