Abstract

Disclosed is a catalyst for purifying exhaust gas, which is composed of a relatively low-cost three-way catalyst containing a noble metal component and suppressed in sintering of the noble metal even at high temperatures. The catalyst for purifying exhaust gas can remove carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbon (HC) and nitrogen oxides (NOx), and particularly excels in removal of nitrogen oxides. An exhaust gas purifying method is also disclosed. Specifically disclosed is a honeycomb catalyst wherein a carrier composed of a honeycomb structure is coated with two or more layers of a catalyst composition for removing carbon monoxide, hydrocarbon and nitrogen oxides contained in exhaust gas. The upper catalyst layer (A) contains palladium supported by a heat-resistant inorganic oxide, an oxygen absorbing / desorbing material, and a barium component. The lower catalyst layer (B) contains rhodium supported by a cerium-zirconium complex oxide having a cerium / zirconium weight ratio of 0.05-0.2 in terms of oxides.
