Embodiment Construction

[0041] figure 1 is a diagram showing a general schematic view of an embodiment of the present disclosure. Subject 101 is monitored using respiration sensor 102 . Examples of breathing sensors include abdominal inductive straps, chest inductive straps, non-contact biomotion sensors, or airflow sensors. The monitored respiratory parameters may include respiratory effort, respiratory motion, tidal volume, or respiratory rate. Optionally, a device 103 for capturing symptoms may also be included. This can be as simple as a written journal, or it can be as simple as asking questions such as "Are you feeling breathless?", "Do you have uncomfortable breathing during sleep?", "Do you feel better or worse than yesterday?", "Do you feel your heart beating faster?" etc. of the electronic data capture device. One example of such an electronic device could be a custom tablet, or, alternatively, a cell phone with voice capture of subjective responses could be used. A person's sleeping p...

Abstract

An apparatus, system, and method for monitoring a person suffering from a chronic medical condition predicts and assesses physiological changes which could affect the care of that subject. Examples of such chronic diseases include (but are not limited to) heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma, and diabetes. Monitoring includes measurements of respiratory movements, which can then be analyzed for evidence of changes in respiratory rate, or for events such as hypoponeas, apneas and periodic breathing. Monitoring may be augmented by the measurement of nocturnal heart rate in conjunction with respiratory monitoring. Additional physiological measurements can also be taken such as subjective symptom data, blood pressure, blood oxygen levels, and various molecular markers. Embodiments for detection of respiratory patterns and heart rate are disclosed, together with exemplar implementations of decision processes based on these measurements.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure relates to a system for monitoring a person with a chronic medical condition to predict and evaluate physiological changes that may affect the subject's care. Examples of such chronic diseases include, but are not limited to, heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma and diabetes. Background technique [0002] To provide a context for the limitations of conventional approaches, it is instructive to briefly review current approaches to chronic disease surveillance for the three major diseases of heart failure, COPD, and asthma. [0003] Heart failure (HF) is a relatively common and severe clinical condition characterized by the inability of the heart to keep up with the body's oxygen demands. The management of heart failure is a significant challenge to contemporary healthcare systems due to its high prevalence and severity. Heart failure is estimated to account for approximately 2-3% of the entire heal...
