Embodiment 1

[0282] The SPF value of Example 1 was 69, as determined by an FDA-approved in vivo method. The SPF value of Example 1 is 61.5, measured in vitro. The similarity of the two SPF values indicates the level of accuracy of the in vitro method used to determine the SPF values of the two example formulations. The SPF value of Example 2 is 46, measured in vitro. Thus, even at the lower SPF value of 46, Inventive Example 2 is very effective in providing protection from UV light, as evidenced by the low p53 expression levels.

[0283] Such as figure 2 As can be seen, the number of sunburn cells is shown for the four sites mentioned above: untreated / unexposed; treated with example formulations 1 and 2; and untreated / exposed. The treated sites were devoid of sunburn cell damage, as were the untreated / non-exposed sites, again demonstrating the efficacy of the formulations of the examples. In contrast, the untreated / exposed site had a much higher number of sunburn cells. Also, as ...

Abstract

The present application relates to a UV protecting composition containing: (a) at least one organic UV sunscreen active; (b) at least one semi-crystalline polymer which is solid at ambient temperature and has a melting point of less than about 8O0C; (c) hollow latex particles; and (d) at least one additional ingredient chosen from: i) a UV light absorbing compound having an SPF of less than 2, and ii) an SPF booster capable of reflecting UV light, different from hollow latex particles, wherein the hollow latex particles are employed in an amount equal to, or greater than, the amount of the at least one organic UV sunscreen active present in the composition. The invention also relates processes for protecting cellular targets from UV rays and free radical- induced damage by topically applying a UV protecting composition onto a keratinous substance, such as skin, and processes for making such compositions.

Description

Background of the invention [0001] Pursuant to 35 U.S.C. §119(e), this application claims the benefit of priority to U.S. Provisional Application Serial No. 61 / 168,435, filed April 10, 2009, which is hereby incorporated by reference in its entirety. [0002] Aging skin is not just a result of chronological age. The skin is exposed to various environmental stresses, such as ultraviolet rays, which lead to the formation of free radicals in the skin. Free radicals include, for example, singlet oxygen, hydroxyl radicals, superoxide anion, nitric oxide, and hydrogen radicals. Free radicals attack DNA, membrane lipids and proteins, generating carbon free radicals. These in turn react with oxygen to produce peroxide radicals, which can attack nearby fatty acids to generate new carbon radicals. This process can set off a chain reaction that produces lipid peroxidation products. Damage to cell membranes can result in loss of cell permeability, increased intercellular ion concentrat...
