Embodiment Construction

[0044] While the invention will be described in conjunction with several embodiments, it will be understood that the invention is not intended to be limited to these embodiments. On the contrary, the invention is intended to cover all alternatives, modifications and equivalents, which may be included within the spirit and scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims.

[0045] Especially in autothermal (ATR) and hydrothermal conversion (WGS) reactions, compared with the corresponding catalysts of conventional size (full size), the advantages of nanoscale catalysts are: higher reactivity, selectivity, hydrogen production reactivity, and undesired methanation reactions are minimized.

[0046] As a major disadvantage of the reforming process, carbon formation (as coke) is a kinetic problem. Thus, coke formation depends on the relative reaction rates of alternative reactions to possible carbon-based reactions. The reaction mechanism depends largely on the type of hydr...

Abstract

A catalytic membrane reactor assembly for producing a hydrogen stream from a feed stream having liquid hydrocarbons, steam, and an oxygen source through the use of an autothermal reforming reaction, a water-gas-shift reaction, and a hydrogen permeable membrane.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to the preparation of autothermal reforming (ATR) catalyst structures useful for the production of hydrogen from liquid fuel hydrocarbons. Background technique [0002] With stricter environmental regulations on transportation fuels and higher levels of heavy crude oil processing, refinery demand for hydrogen is expected to rise to meet the increasing demand for hydrotreating and hydrogenation cracking process requirements. Currently, about 95% of hydrogen is supplied by large-scale steam reforming of natural gas, which is followed by reforming, water-gas shift (WGS) and pressure adsorption processes in subsequent steps. However, efficiency can be limited in small-scale operations. Therefore, further development of small-scale hydrogen production from fossil fuels is required to meet the purity, economy, and versatility demands of emerging applications such as those in fuel cell-powered vehicles. [0003] In the last de...
