Embodiment Construction

[0011] This specification relates to supplying fuel to an engine such that liquid fuel is injected into the engine while reducing fuel pump energy consumption. In one example, fuel is passed as figure 1 The fuel system shown in is supplied to the engine. Such as figure 2 As shown in , the compressibility of the fuel can be determined to adjust the output of the fuel pump. Such as image 3 As shown in , the desired fuel pump output pressure can be determined by determining the fuel pump pressure at which the fuel compressibility increases. A method for adjusting the output of a fuel pump in response to fuel compression Figure 4 is shown in .

[0012] refer to figure 1 , an internal combustion engine 10 comprising a plurality of cylinders is controlled by an electronic engine controller 12, at figure 1 One of the cylinders is shown in . Engine 10 includes combustion chamber 30 and cylinder walls 32 with piston 36 disposed therein and connected to crankshaft 40 . Combu...

Abstract

An engine system and method for adjusting pressure of fuel supplied to an engine responsive to compressibility of fuel supplied to the engine is disclosed. In one example, the engine is operated with a fuel pump in an off state to determine compressibility of fuel supplied to the engine. Fuel pressure supplied to the engine is adjusted responsive to the fuel compressibility.

Description

Background technique [0001] Port fuel injected engines receive fuel pumped from a fuel tank by a fuel pump. A fuel pump supplies fuel to a fuel rail, and fuel injectors coupled to the fuel rail inject fuel into an engine intake. Depending on the state of the fuel in the fuel rail, fuel may be delivered from the fuel rail to the engine as a liquid, a gas, or a mixture of gas and liquid. However, injecting a liquid fuel may be more desirable because the amount of fuel injected may be more easily controlled. Injection of liquid fuel is ensured by increasing the fuel pressure above the vapor pressure of the fuel. Fuel pressure may be increased by supplying additional energy to the fuel pump. However, increasing the amount of energy supplied to the fuel pump can reduce vehicle fuel economy because the energy to operate the fuel pump is derived from an alternator coupled to the vehicle's engine. Additionally, the pressure at which fuel is delivered to the engine in a liquid stat...
