[0067] IR spectroscopy

[0068] IR spectroscopy is a very common analytical method used in chemistry to characterize the structure of a desired molecule. It is important to understand the basic physical conventions that make up IR spectroscopy in order to fully understand how radiative heating applications work. In principle, electromagnetic radiation in the IR range is emitted from a source and propagates with the speed of light c. These electromagnetic waves are usually characterized by frequency v or wavelength λ, which are related by the equation c=vλ. Furthermore, the frequency of the emitted wave is directly proportional to its energy, as shown in Planck's law, E=hv, where h is Planck's constant. This equation can also be adjusted to show that wavelength and energy are inversely proportional, such as E=hc / λ. Also, E∝v and E∝1 / λ. Infrared radiation extends from a wavelength of 700 nm to 1 mm, corresponding...

Abstract

An apparatus (1) for heating an insulation fluid (10) in a medium-voltage or high-voltage switchgear (100) comprises an infrared source (3) which is adapted to emit infrared radiation (4) of at leastone wavelength. Thus, at least one vibrational or rotational mode of at least one component (11) of the insulation fluid (10) is excited by absorption of at least a part of the infrared radiation (4),and condensation of the insulation fluid (10) is efficiently prevented by this direct heating of the insulation fluid (10). A closed loop temperature regulator (5) is used to heat only when required.A circulator (7) in a heating chamber (8) further provides for a mixing of the insulation fluid (10), thus preventing steep temperature gradients.

Description

technical field [0001] The invention relates to a heating device and method for heating insulating fluids for use in medium and high voltage switchgear. Other aspects of the invention relate to a medium or high voltage switchgear comprising such a heating device and a power transmission network comprising such a switchgear. Background technique [0002] Insulating fluid such as SF6, CO2 or C 5 f 10 O(C5 perfluoroketones) can be used in switchgear for eg medium or high voltage current interruption applications because of their excellent arc extinguishing capabilities and dielectric strength. However, when these substances are subjected to cryogenic conditions, they may start to condense or resublimate from their gaseous state to their liquid or solid form, thereby interfering with the functionality of the switching device due to this phase change. In other words, at low temperatures, liquefaction of the insulating fluid can occur and this reduces the effective density of t...
