Abstract

A synthetic polyisoprene latex emulsion having a pre-vulcanized composition and a post-vulcanized composition is disclosed. The pre-sulfurized composition comprises insoluble amorphous sulfur that is extracted with a zinc dithiocarbamate catalyst at 20 DEG C to form sulfur chains and delivered into the synthetic polyisoprene particles to form a physical connection of sulfur to the active sites. The degree of prevulcanization is verified by a swelling index test by expanding the cast and dried latex film in toluene within 20 minutes. The latex emulsion is vulcanized at 90 DEG C to 120 DEG C for 3 to 5 minutes. A post-vulcanized composition with an accelerator is cross-linked between synthetic polyisoprene particles, uniformly cured between and within the particle regions to produce high cross-linking density, uniform distribution of double bonds, and zinc segregation at the original particle boundaries. The condom has high tensile strength, tensile modulus and elongation and excellent tear strength, and released nitrosamine is lower than 10 ppb.
