[0009] Some oxygen measurement systems use zirconia sensor cells. The zirconia sensor unit works by detecting the difference in oxygen concentration between the two sides of the sensor (sensing side and reference side). A reference gas with a known oxygen concentration is usually used on the reference side of the sensor. For some applications, ambient air is used as the reference gas. The other side of the sensor is in the environment where oxygen measurements are required. The environment may be, for example, the flue gas or exhaust gas flow of a combustion system. Based on the known concentration of the reference gas and the detected difference between the reference side and the sensor side, the oxygen content in the measured environment can be calculated.
