Embodiment Construction

[0016] The present invention thinks, after a specific reactant is mixed with the lithium halide containing lithium molybdate anticorrosion agent, specifically the brine of lithium bromide, a specific chromaticity response will be produced, and this chromaticity response is molybdate anticorrosion agent. An accurate indication of the concentration of the agent. This knowledge was generalized and applied to methods for the on-site determination of molybdate corrosion inhibitor concentrations in absorption refrigeration systems using economical portable analytical devices.

[0017] According to the present invention, a representative refrigeration system (not shown) uses water and an aqueous solution of lithium halide (typically lithium bromide LiBr), ie, brine, as the working fluid in an absorption refrigerator. In some cases, the lithium halide can be LiCl. The concentration of LiBr in the brine is typically 50-60%, in an embodiment of the invention about 55%. The refrigerati...

Abstract

A method and apparatus are provided for quantifying molybdate corrosion inhibitor concentrations in lithium halide brines of absorption refrigeration systems. This permits monitoring and control of the inhibitor level. A reagent is chosen for reacting with the molybdate in the brine to provide a readily identifiable characteristic color, the intensity of which is a function and measure of the molybdate concentration. The reagent is an acidified reducing agent. In a lithium bromide brine, the molybdate concentration is conveniently identified by reaction with stannous chloride SnCl2 in hydrochloric acid Hcl (aq). The resulting color corresponds to is pink. Portable measuring equipment, such as a hand held spectrophotometer, or colorimeter, provide a convenient means for making on-site measurements.

Description

technical field [0001] This invention relates generally to absorption refrigeration systems, and more particularly to the analysis of absorption refrigeration systems, and more particularly to methods and apparatus for the analysis of corrosion inhibitors present in absorption refrigeration systems. Background technique [0002] There are many different pairs of refrigerants and absorbents used in absorption refrigeration systems. A pair of such substances are water and a lithium halide salt, such as lithium bromide, lithium chloride, or lithium iodide mixed with water as a concentrated lithium salt solution in water. Another such pair is water and ammonia. [0003] Iron and iron alloys like steel and copper and copper alloys are typical materials of construction used in absorption refrigeration systems. Corrosion of these materials can cause problems. This corrosion not only causes the consumption of related metals, but also the oxidation of ferrous metals is accompanied...
