Embodiment

[0139] The characterization of uniform beads or protrusions as spacer elements 16 is straightforward. When rough-surfaced materials are used as the donor support 34, the characterization of materials that can be used effectively in the present invention, compared to those that are not, is more complicated. It was observed that displays fabricated from a rough support for the donor support 34 resulted in better pixel uniformity and higher luminous efficiency than displays made with a smooth support for the donor support 34 . In order to characterize the roughness required for an improved EL device, a series of roughness-modified supports were used as donor supports 34 . Substrates are solvent cast polyimides, thermoplastic polyimides, polyetherimides, polysulfones, polyethylene naphthalate and polyethylene terephthalate. Samples of these supports were held on flat glass plates with a vacuum of approximately 1 atmosphere. Colored Newton's rings, which are caused by the close c...

Abstract

A method for making an organic electroluminescent display device having an array of pixels disposed on a display substrate includes providing spacer elements either individually or as part of a donor element or a display substrate. Radiation-induced thermal transfer is then used to transfer organic material from the donor element to the display substrate.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to methods of fabricating organic electroluminescent devices, and more particularly to producing display elements using radiation-induced thermal transfer of organic materials. Background technique [0002] In a color or full-color organic electroluminescent (EL) display having an array of colored pixels, such as red, green, and blue colored pixels (commonly referred to as RGB pixels), the generation of RGB pixels requires precise patterns of color-producing organic EL media change. A basic organic EL device commonly has an anode, a cathode, and an organic EL medium sandwiched between the anode and the cathode. An organic EL medium may consist of one or more organic thin film layers, wherein one of the layers or a region inside a layer is mainly used for generating light or electroluminescence. This particular layer is generally referred to as the light emitting layer of the organic EL medium. Other organic layers that ...
