Embodiment 1

[0110] Embodiment 1 purpose:

[0111] The scope of this example was to investigate whether triclosan could be incorporated into hot melt adhesives to provide anti-microbial properties to single use products. Irgasan PA  Triclosan is manufactured by CIBA and used as a bacteriostat. Test method / results:

[0112] Two hot melt adhesives were chosen to be mixed with a small percentage of triclosan. One is a water dispersible adhesive available from Ato Findley, Inc. under the trade designation H9548. The binder is based on sulfonated polyester available from Eastman Chemical. A more detailed description of this polymer can be found in US 4,910,292; 4,973,656 and 4,990,593. Recently, improved sulfonated polyesters were developed (WO95 / 181891 to Miller et al.) characterized by a reduced Tg by introducing a degree of branching.

[0113] The second product is a standard diaper construction adhesive available from Ato Findley, Inc. under the trade designati...

Embodiment 2

[0120] Additional tests were performed to further investigate whether the anti-microbial agent incorporated into the adhesive was effective in inhibiting bacterial growth. With the content of 0.5% and 0.75%, two antibacterial agents, chlorophene (2-benzyl-4-chlorophenol 95%) and triclosan (2,2,4'-trichloro-2'-hydroxybenzene base ether), respectively blended into two different adhesives, H9548 (copolyester based on water soluble hot melt) and H2543 (SIS based on structural hot melt). These formulations, along with a control formulation without antimicrobial agent, were fibrously coated at a coat weight of 3 g / m2 onto a standard 15.3 g / m2 nonwoven. A total of 11 samples, including pure nonwoven rolls, were delivered to the test.

[0121] Following the standard plate-agar diffusion method for antimicrobial susceptibility testing of clinical bacterial isolates, a screening test to assess the efficacy of the use of adhesives including antimicrobials will be modeled. Three known b...

Abstract

Hot melt adhesive compositions suitable for a variety of applications, especially in nonwoven disposable articles, are prepared by blending various adhesive components with a bacteriostat. The bacteriostat is incorporated into the adhesive compositions in sufficient amounts to inhibit the growth of various microorganisms, particularly bacteria. The preferred bacteriostat is triclosan in amounts of 0.0 1 % to 5 % by weight.

Description

Background of the invention [0001] The present invention relates to hot melt adhesives, and more particularly to hot melt adhesives which have antimicrobial properties and which can be used to make disposable nonwoven articles. [0002] Nonwoven fabrics consist of a network of interwoven fibers and are used in the construction of single-use consumer products. Specific applications for nonwovens include disposable diapers, feminine toilet paper, surgical drapes, hospital liners and adult incontinence products. [0003] In the applications described above, it is often necessary to adhere nonwovens, tissue paper, absorbent fluff, etc. to another substrate. The second substrate may be another nonwoven fabric, tissue paper, or a layer such as a polyolefinic material such as polyethylene or polypropylene. Typically, hot melt adhesives are used to bond the above materials together since no evaporation step is required during manufacture, which is necessary with water- or solvent-ba...
