[0068] Examples 1 to 8, Comparative Examples A to D

[0069] Preparation of Copolymers by Batch Emulsion Polymerization

[0070] In 1 liter of Mortonized cracking resin flask (split resin flask), add 100 grams of monomers (the details are listed in the following table I, the amount of all monomers listed are grams), 80 milligrams of carbon tetrabromide, 124.7 grams deionized water, 200 mg potassium persulfate, 64 mg sodium metabisulfite, 1 gram sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate, and 2.5 grams Mazon SAM 211 alkylene polyalkoxy ammonium sulfate copolymerizable Surfactant (available from PPG Industries, Pittsburgh, PA). The flask was topped and attached with thermocouple, nitrogen gas inlet and mechanical stirrer. The headroom of the flask was purged with nitrogen at a rate of 1 liter per minute while the contents were heated to about 30° C. with an infrared lamp and stirred at a rate of 250 revolutions per minute (rpm). About 1 g of a solution of 28 mg of ferrous sulfate heptah...

[0084] Tetrapolymers prepared by semi-continuous emulsion polymerization

[0085] A solution of 1.0 g carbon tetrabromide was prepared in a mixture of 275 g 2-EHA, 200 g IBOA, 12.5 g MAA and 12.5 g AA to obtain 500 g containing 55 / 40 / 2.5 / 2.5 parts 2-EHA / IOBA / MAA / AA monomer solution. Of the total monomer solution, 50 grams of this was added to a 2 liter cracked resin flask along with 390 grams of deionized water and 0.5 grams of sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate. The flask was topped and attached with thermocouple, nitrogen gas inlet and mechanical stirrer. The contents were heated to about 60°C with an infrared lamp and stirred at a rate of 350 revolutions per minute (rpm). A solution of 1.25 grams of potassium persulfate in 20 grams of deionized water was added, the flask was sealed and evacuated four times, interrupted each time with nitrogen. The temperature of the flask was kept at 60°C for 20 minutes, and then heated to 80°C over 10 minutes to obtain a seed polymer. A p...

[0087] Preparation of Terpolymers by Semicontinuous Solution Polymerization

[0088] According to the procedure of Example 9, polymerize a monomer solution of 300 grams of 2-EHS, 175 grams of IBOA, 25 grams of MAA and 1 gram of carbon tetrabromide (Example 10) or 250 grams of 2-EHA, 225 grams of IBOA, 25 grams of Monomer solution of AA and 1 g of carbon tetrabromide (Example 11). The monomer solution of Example 10 contained 60 / 35 / 5 parts 2-EHA / IBOA / MAA. The monomer solution of Example 11 contained 50 / 45 / 5 parts 2-EHA / IBOA / AA.

Abstract

A composition for nails, skin and hair in the form of an aqueous emulsion or dispersion is provided. The composition comprises: (a) at least one copolymer comprising (i) about 10 to 85 weight percent of (meth)acrylate ester of C4 to C18 straight and/or branched chain alkyl alcohol, (ii) about 10 to 70 weight percent of (meth)acrylate ester of a saturated or unsaturated cyclic alcohol containing 6 to 20 carbon atoms; and (b) an aqueous carrier, solvent, or vehicle component. When used in hair applications, the inventive composition is not a reshapable composition.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to compositions for cosmetic and personal care, such as skin, hair and nail care. Specifically, the compositions are aqueous, acrylic-based copolymer emulsions or dispersions that dry quickly to form a flexible, non-sticky film. Background of the invention [0002] Polymers have been used to reduce or prevent the peeling off of cosmetics or the wash-off of sunscreens. Typically, these polymers are hydrophobic and derive their hydrophobicity from long-chain olefins (such as U.S. Patent Nos. 5,026,540; Nos. 4,172,122 and 4,552,755). Polymers that have been disclosed for the above purpose also include silicone pressure sensitive adhesives (such as U.S. Patent No. 5,460,804), styrene-ethylene-propylene block copolymers (such as U.S. Patent No. 6,060,072), or Polymers of vinyl or allyl ester comonomers (eg, US Republished Patent No. 29,871). Polymers proposed so far generally have low glass transition temperatures (T g ) a...
