Garments with nontraditional access for impaired individuals

This multiple component invention comprises a shirt, pants and bodysuit, which are readily donned without the necessity of executing normal dressing movements. Although conventional looking, this adjustable clothing combination does not don in the conventional manner, this clothing combination opens fully, allowing the physically challenged individual to readily self-don without assistance. The need for bending one's knees, bending forward or downward, removing and replacing one's shoes, is eliminated. The donning of the shirt does not require the individual to fold their arms or raise them to the shoulders. The very nature of this invention and improvements over prior art, allows the individual who has become dependent on others, to return to a life of self-reliance, independently living on one's own. The attributes of this multiple component invention for the wheelchair bound or bed-ridden individual needing assistance, will aid the caregiver, lessening stress on the patient and the caregiver.

Intracellular interleukin-1 receptor antagonist and uses thereof

Matrix metalloproteinases are major mediators of tissue destruction in various chronic inflammatory disorders. The present invention demonstrates that over- expression of intracellular isoform of IL-1 receptor antagonist confers to recipient cells resistance to signaling pathways of proinflammatory cytokines (such as tumor necrosis factor alpha and IL-1 beta) that induce matrix metalloproteinase and subsequent tissue degradation. Hence, over-expression of intracellular IL-1 receptor antagonist may inhibit tissue destruction in various inflammatory disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis, other arthritides, degenerative intervertebral disc disease and chronic skin ulcers that occurs in diabetes mellitus and bed-ridden patients.

Build-a-boot

A heel supporting and protective boot for bed-ridden patients who may otherwise develop pressure sores on their heel. The body of the boot is comprised of unitary exterior and interior body forms that are stitched together to combine fiber filling and an angled foam wedge. The boot additionally has sewn tube holes on both sides allowing for insertion of medical tubing, as may be necessary. The inner fabric of the boot is antibacterial and moisture absorbent, while the outer fabric is moisture repellant. The boot is fabricated with left and right “Y-straps” that provide secure upper and lower fastening of the boot as it envelops the patient's foot and lower leg. Also utilized are two “loop” straps and a T-stabilizer which stabilize the boot and keep the foot at a 90 degree angle to help eliminate foot drop. An opening at the heel of the boot, and a circular cutout in the foam wedge, allow the heel to remain exposed to air, provide proper elevation, and enhance blood circulation. The fiber / foam combination, dual fabric covering, foot positioning straps, and open heel design all work together to enhance the healing of existing ulcers, while minimizing the occurrence of foot drop and the occurrence of new pressure points.

System and method for treating and preventing pressure sores in bedridden patients

A system such as a hospital bed provides capability to monitor and alleviate the pressure points and provides oxygen and water jets to prevent and treat bed sores in bed-ridden patients. An array of balloons touching each other form a mattress of unstitched but contiguous balloons like in a conventional mattress with stitched puffs. Individual pressure sensors placed within each balloon measure and monitor pressure. Furthermore, horizontal rods which lay between the balloons perform oxygenation and provide water massage to the back of the patient body from the interstitial spaces within the unstitched mattress of contiguous balloons. The rods are elevated to raise the patient above the mattress to relieve overall pressure and enable cleaning and wipe down of the back of the patient body. The rods can elevate the entire patient body or its torso alone or the lower extremities alone to clean as desired.
