The invention provides a method for augmenting circulation in a patient having carotid stenosis. An elongate tubular member is provided having a lumen communicating with a port at a distal end. The tubular member is inserted into a peripheral artery and the distal port is advanced into a first carotid artery substantially free of a lesion where the patient possesses a second carotid artery substantially occluded by a lesion. Blood is perfused into the first carotid artery through the tubular member. Contralateral flow is augmented to improve perfusion to an ischemic region distal to the carotid stenosis. Angioplasty and stenting can be used to open the lesion in the second carotid artery.

A hydraulic system for a transmission has a diffuser housing with a fluid inlet passage that feeds one or more pump inlet ports, and a fluid return passage, such as to return fluid from a pressure regulator valve, that is in fluid communication with the fluid inlet passage. A flow path switching valve is disclosed that can be operated remotely simply by turning flow on and off. A mid portion of the body has at least one passage therein leading from a central axial bore to one or more external ports each having a tractor nozzle. The valve outlet connects the axial bore to a cleaning nozzle. A poppet member is received in the central axial bore. In a first position, the poppet member directs fluid flow through the outlet to the cleaning nozzle connected to the outlet. The poppet member, when in a second position, closes the central axial bore through the outlet end of the valve body and permits fluid flow through the tractor nozzles. A control system for an engine capable of operating on more than one type of fuel includes an engine control unit that determines a default fuel volume to be injected into the engine based on relevant engine parameters and characteristics of a default fuel type. A default mass fuel flow rate is derived from the default fuel volume and relevant engine parameters. The actual mass fuel flow rate into the engine is inferred from the mass air flow rate into the engine and the exhaust gas air-to-fuel ratio, which is determined using a wide range oxygen sensor. A fuel correction factor is calculated from the default mass fuel flow rate and the inferred mass fuel flow rate. The fuel correction factor is used to increment or decrement the default fuel volume in a subsequent fuel injection cycle thereby incrementing or decrementing the inferred mass fuel flow rate toward the default mass fuel flow rate.

If an engine undergoes high-load operations immediately after it is started up from its cold state, a thermostat is closed to inhibit passage of cooling water through the inside of the engine, and the cooling water stagnant in a cylinder head receives heat from a combustion chamber. Therefore, the cooling water will possibly boil. However, the thermostat is formed in such a manner that a valve body may be opened forcedly if the discharge flow rate of a water pump is greater than the flow rate in a normal use region. Therefore, in such a situation, the discharge flow rate of the water pump is increased greater than the flow rate in the normal use region to open the valve body with good response, thereby passing water into the engine quickly. This configuration prevents the cooling water stagnant in the cylinder head from boiling before the valve body is opened completely.

A fuel cell system has a compressor delivering compressed gas to a fuel cell stack and a control valve affecting the flow of compressed gas. A load dump condition is determined for the fuel cell stack.
