An oxidation catalyst is disposed upstream of a diesel particulate filter (DPF) in an exhaust passage of a diesel engine. An electronic control unit (ECU) operates temperature increasing circuit to combust and eliminate particulate matters deposited on the DPF. The ECU determines execution and stoppage of regeneration of the DPF based on a quantity of the particulate matters deposited on the DPF. The ECU increases an exhaust gas recirculation quantity (EGR quantity) during the regeneration to reduce an intake air quantity from the intake air quantity in a non-regeneration period and to achieve a flow rate of the exhaust gas passing through the DPF suitable for the temperature increase. The ECU corrects a valve opening degree of an EGR control valve based on the sensed intake air quantity to reduce a variation in the exhaust gas flow rate.

An ECU calculates a foreign-matter accumulation index base on a total flow rate of EGR gas integrated since the previous execution of a last foreign-matter removal operation until the present execution of the foreign-matter removal operation. The ECU controls an actuator for operating an EGR valve and a number of the actuations of the EGR valve on the basis of the foreign-matter accumulation index. When the total flow rate of the EGR gas increases, the quantity of foreign matters contained in EGR gas correspondingly increases. Therefore, as the foreign-matter accumulation index becomes larger, the actuation intensity of the EGR valve is set higher and the number of the actuations of the EGR valve is set larger. Since the fluid dynamic performance presents the aspect ratio approaching infinity, the width of the blades can be increased whereas the induced drag is not increased. Applying the method of increasing the area of the blades and decreasing the velocity of outflow fluid, the effect on saving of energy can be further improved greatly on the present basis.

A mid portion of the body has at least one passage therein leading from a central axial bore to one or more external ports each having a tractor nozzle. The valve outlet connects the axial bore to a cleaning nozzle. A poppet member is received in the central axial bore. In a first position, the poppet member directs fluid flow through the outlet to the cleaning nozzle connected to the outlet. The poppet member, when in a second position, closes the central axial bore through the outlet end of the valve body and permits fluid flow through the tractor nozzles. Selection of the different flow paths is made by simply reducing flow through the valve below a predetermined fluid flow threshold and then increasing the flow rate above the threshold.

The fuel correction factor is used to increment or decrement the default fuel volume in a subsequent fuel injection cycle thereby incrementing or decrementing the inferred mass fuel flow rate toward the default mass fuel flow rate.
