Embodiment 1

[0068] Phosphate 4 (tris-3-methyl-4-propylphenol phosphate) was synthesized using a method similar to that outlined in Comparative Example 1, but utilizing different starting materials as shown in Table 1.

[0069]

[0070] The properties of the phosphate esters prepared according to the examples are summarized in Table 1.

Abstract

A phosphate ester composition comprising greater than 50% by mass of a phosphate ester represented by formula 1, wherein X, Y and Z are independently selected from the group consisting of alkyl, heteroalkyl, heteroaryl or aryl, X , at least one of Y and Z is an aryl group represented by formula 2, and wherein two or more of R3, R4 and R5 have 1 to 10 carbon atoms, and the total number of carbon atoms in R3, R4 and R5 is 3 to 30. The phosphate ester composition is used as a flame retardant, a lubricant, an anti-wear additive, a hydraulic fluid, a self-extinguishing functional fluid or an additive thereof.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims priority to US Application No. 62 / 239,319, filed October 9, 2015, the disclosure of which is hereby incorporated by reference for all purposes. [0003] Background of the invention [0004] The present invention relates to phosphate ester compositions and uses thereof. [0005] [0006] The use of phosphate esters of the above general formula (Formula A) as lubricants and flame retardants is well known in the art. [0007] Triaryl phosphates (see formula B below) have been used for many years and are used as flame retardant plasticizers, flame retardants, antiwear agents, boundary lubricants, antioxidants, and functional fluids (self-extinguishing hydraulic fluids) ) additives are well known in the art. [0008] b. [0009] The first generation triaryl phosphates were based on phenol or refined cresol / xylenol from coal tar. These triaryl phosphates may be ortho [2,6], meta [3,5] or para [4...
