Embodiment Construction

[0015] This instruction manual deals with operating the engine and the BISG, which can be used to start the engine when it is cold or warm. engine can be figure 1 type shown in . engine and BISG can be included in as figure 2 shown in the drive train of a hybrid vehicle. The BISG is operable to crank the engine, generate electrical power, or provide torque to propel the vehicle. Figure 3A to Figure 3I Several different configurations are shown whereby the BISG can spin and crank the engine during engine cranking. In one example, the BISG is coupled to the engine via a belt during engine start. In another example, the BISG is coupled to the engine via a pinion. Figure 4 An example sequence of operations for starting an engine via a BISG clutch is shown. Figure 5 A method for operating a BISG to improve engine starting is shown.

Abstract

The disclosure provides a method and system for starting an engine. Systems and methods for operating a hybrid powertrain or driveline that includes an engine and an integrated starter / generator are described. In one example, the integrated starter / generator may crank the engine via a pinion gear during a first engine start. The integrated starter / generator may crank the engine via a belt during asecond engine start.

Description

technical field [0001] The present description relates to methods and systems for operating a powertrain of a hybrid vehicle. The method and system are particularly useful for hybrid vehicles that include a belt-driven transmission starter / generator. Background technique [0002] A hybrid powertrain or driveline may include a belt starter / generator (BISG) to charge the vehicle's battery, provide propulsion power to the vehicle, and start the vehicle's engine. The BISG may be mechanically coupled to the engine crankshaft or camshaft via a belt. Tensioners may be applied to the belt to keep the belt snug on the crankshaft pulleys and pulleys coupled to the BISG shaft or to the shaft of the BISG. However, in some cases, the pulley may not be able to efficiently transfer torque between the BISG and the engine, and the belt may slip. When belt slip is present, the belt may degrade and energy transfer between the BISG and the engine may be reduced. Accordingly, it may be desir...
