The working method of the system comprises the following steps: (1) selecting a lamp control line group of a traffic signal controller as an access point of the whole monitoring system; (2) designing a signal acquisition circuit, detecting the voltage inside a signal machine, and convertingsignals into square waves which can be processed by a single-chip microcomputer through voltage reducing, shaping and the like; (3) measuring the period of the signals and the count value of square waves at any moment through the single-chip microcomputer, calculating the remaining time at any moment through a formula that the remaining time is equal to the difference between the on duration of the signal lamps and the count value at the moment, and determining a channel of street lamps to which the remaining time belongs by marking a corresponding state on the channel; and (4) simultaneouslyconnecting multiple signal lamp lines to the monitoring system to obtain the states of the traffic lamps in the south-north direction and the east-west direction at the moment.
