Problems solved by technology

The problem is that mineral oil based fill compositions such as those used with PBT buffer tubes have low compatibility with polyolefin buffer tube materials
Migration of mineral oil into the polyolefin material leads to a decrease in the mechanical properties of the buffer tube

Abstract

A filling composition comprises (A) a mineral oil having a kinematic viscosity from 80 cSt to 100 cSt at 40 degrees centigrade; (B) a styrene-ethylene / propylene diblock copolymer; and (C1) a propylene / ethylene copolymer having a weight average molecular weight (Mw) from 5000 to 200000 or (C2) an ethylene / propylene copolymer having a weight average molecular weight (Mw) from 5000 to 200000. The filling composition is used as a filling composition in a buffer tube.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure relates to fiber optic cables. In one aspect, the present disclosure relates to filling compositions for fiber optic cables, and in another aspect, the present disclosure relates to fiber optic cables including the filling compositions. Background technique [0002] A fiber optic cable includes one or more optical fibers or other optical waveguides that conduct optical signals (eg, to carry voice, data, video, or other information). Typically, the optical fibers are arranged in a tubular assembly called a buffer tube. To protect the optical fiber from damage (eg, exposure to moisture / humidity, physical stress), the buffer tube is filled with a filling composition surrounding the optical fiber. The filling composition is used as a moisture barrier to prevent water damage to optical fibers and as a cushion to absorb mechanical shock. The filling composition may be a fluid, gel, grease or thixotropic material. [0003] Buffer tu...
