Abstract

A technique for providing thermal protection of a current sensor in a power converter used in an electric vehicle that utilizes a driving electromotor to supply powder is provided. The power converteris provided with a switching element, a current sensor, a cooler and a controller. The switching element converts output of a battery to driving power of a driving electromotor. The current sensor ismounted on a bus bar in which an output current of the switching element flows, and measuring output current. The cooler cools the switching element. The controller determines an estimated temperature of the current sensor based on the temperature of a refrigerant. The controller determines first and second correction values for the estimated temperature based on the output current and an input voltage applied to the switching element. The controller restricts a load on the switching element when a corrected temperature, which is obtained by adding the first and second correction values to the estimated temperature, exceeds a predetermined temperature threshold.
