Embodiment Construction

[0025] Aspects of the present disclosure relate to a sterilization indicator reading device having a compact housing. Aspects of the present disclosure also include the use of a color sensor to detect the fluorescence of the sterilization indicator. For example, the use of a low-cost color sensor not only reads the fluorescent detection cycle, but also verifies that the sterilization indicator is activated. Other aspects of the present disclosure relate to a display of a reading device that is partially illuminated through the main side of the housing and that is visible from at least 10 feet away.

[0026] Figure 1 illustrates a system 99 including a sterilization indicator 106 and a sterilization indicator reading device 100, according to at least one embodiment. Reading device 100 may position a plurality of sterilization indicators within a plurality of recesses, one recess being detailed (eg, 108 ).

[0027] The reading device 100 may include a housing 101 . The housin...

Abstract

Aspects of the present disclosure relate to a reading apparatus that has a recess formed from a portion of a housing. The recess is dimensioned to receive at least a portion of a sterilization indicator having spores. The reading apparatus can also have a heating element thermally coupled to a portion of the recess and an excitation source to excite the substance in the sterilization indicator. The reading apparatus can have a sterilization indicator activation circuit for detecting activation of the sterilization indicator. The excitation source is positioned such that light from the excitation source is directed into the recess. A color sensor can be positioned adjacent the recess to receive reflected light from the sterilization indicator.

Description

Background technique [0001] In many industries such as the healthcare industry, as well as in other industrial applications, it may be necessary to monitor the effectiveness of processes used to sterilize equipment such as medical devices, instruments, and other disposable and non-disposable articles. In these cases, a sterilization cycle is generally defined as the process of complete destruction of all viable sources of biological activity such as microorganisms, including structures such as viruses and spores. As a standard practice, hospitals place a sterilization indicator with a batch of products to test the lethality of the sterilization process. Biological and chemical sterilization indicators have been used. [0002] A standard type of biological sterilization indicator includes a known amount of a test organism such as Geobacillus stearothermophilus (formerly Bacillus stearothermophilus) or Bacillus atrophaeus (formerly known as Bacillus subtilis) spores, the abili...
