Abstract

The invention relates to a multi-scale image processing algorithm for enhancing the contrast-to-noise ratio in an electronic representation of an image. A digital image is represented by a) decomposing the digital image into a detail image at a plurality of resolution levels and a set of residual images at a resolution level lower than the plurality of resolution levels, b) processing the detail image, c) computing a processed image by applying a reconstruction algorithm to the residual image and the processed detail image, the reconstruction algorithm is such that if it is applied to residual images and detail images without processing, an approximation of the digital image or its proximity will be obtained.
