AI Technical Summary

Problems solved by technology

In particular, a means of loading metal complexes on an inert support to prevent subsequent premature loss of the support in the polymerization reactor has not been obtained.
Also, loading metal complexes and catalyst compositions including them in a manner that prevents loss of polymerization activity has also proven difficult
On the other hand, and surprisingly, it has been determined that loading of the above-mentioned metal complexes and catalyst compositions comprising them by the prior art can lead to too much activation of the supported catalyst composition, resulting in excessive localized heat generation and polymer particle melting, thereby leading to the formation of polymer lumps or chunks and poor reactor operability

Embodiment 1-3

[0252] The following examples serve to illustrate the invention and should in no way be construed as limiting the invention. It will be understood by those skilled in the art that the invention disclosed herein may be practiced in the absence of any components not specifically disclosed. All parts and percentages are by weight unless stated to the contrary. If used, the term "overnight" means a period of about 16-18 hours, "room temperature" means a temperature of about 20-25°C, and "mixed alkanes" means C 6-9 Mixtures of aliphatic hydrocarbons, with the trade mark Isopar E  Available from Exxon Chemicals, Inc. In cases where the compound name and its structure do not match, the structure controls. All metal complex syntheses and all shielding test preparations were performed under a dry nitrogen atmosphere using dry box techniques. All solvents used were HPLC grade and were dried between uses.

Embodiment 1

[0260] Example 1 0.105 grams (10.2 μmol) of propane-1,3-bis[oxyphenyl-2-((N-2,3,4,5-diindene) prepared according to US-A-2004 / 0005984 Indole)-5-methyl-2-oxo)phenyl]dimethylhafnium (which is subsequently converted to the dimethyl complex by reaction with methylmagnesium bromide) (see Figure 1 for the structure), 2.01 g of MAO modified Inert Silica 1A and 25 mL of dry degassed toluene were added to a 50 mL glass flask. The bottle was capped and shaken on an orbital shaker for 4.5 hours. The solid product was isolated by filtration and dried under reduced pressure.

Embodiment 2

[0262] Example 2 Preparation of propane-1,3-bis[oxyphenyl-2-((N-2,3,4,5-dibenzopyrrole)-5- Methyl-2-oxo)phenyl] dimethyl hafnium (see Figure 1 for the structure) in 25 ml of toluene solution. This solution was combined with a continuously stirred slurry of surface treated fumed silica 1D, and the combined mixture was stirred for an additional 1 hour. The mixture was spray dried under anaerobic conditions (essentially as disclosed in US-A-5,672,669 and US-A-5,674,795) using a laboratory spray dryer located in a drying box. A total of 11 g of spherical particles with a D50 particle size of 5-15 μm and an average hafnium content of 40 μmol / g were obtained.

Abstract

A supported, heterogeneous catalyst composition for use in polymerization of addition polymerizable monomers to form high molecular weight polymers, comprising: 1) a substrate comprising a solid, particulated, high surface area, surface modified, inorganic oxide compound, 2) a Group 4 metal complex of a bis(hydroxyarylaryloxy) ligand; and optionally 3) an activating cocatalyst for the metal complex.

Description

[0001] Cross Reference Statement [0002] This application claims the benefit of US Provisional Application Nos. 60 / 600,091 and 60 / 632,100, filed August 9, 2004, and December 1, 2004, respectively. Background technique [0003] This invention relates to supported olefin polymerization catalysts, processes for the preparation of polypropylene and other olefin polymers derived from propylene. The resulting polymers are known and can be used for the production of solid substances, such as molded parts, films, plates and foam parts obtained by moulding, extrusion or other methods. The resulting products include automotive components such as bumpers; packaging materials; and other applications. [0004] A certain transition metal bis( diphenylphenol) donor complex. In paragraph 0120 of each disclosure, the use of supports such as silica or alumina for the preparation of heterogeneous versions of this metal complex is described. [0005] While there are advantages to the above m...
