The embodiment of the invention provides a compound water retention agent used in potatoes and a preparation method thereof. The water retention agent is formed by blending the following raw materials according to the weight ratio: 2-12 of humic acid kalium, 14-36 of water retention agent, 16-24 of urea, 16-24 of calcium hydrogenphosphate, 8-12 of sulphuric acid potash fertilizer, 1 of lanthanum nitrate, 1 of yttrium nitrate, and 5-7 of cross linker. The compound water retention agent combines biology and physiology characteristics of the potatoes and adopts the moisture retention and slow release property on fertilizer of organic and inorganic water retention agent to improve the property of soil; nutritive elements, a mycorhiza agent, trace elements in the compound water retention agent are reasonably matched to prepare a special compound water retention agent suitable for potato plating in northern area; the compound water retention agent has good moisture retention and can promote anti-drought seedling formation and increasing yield of potatoes.
