Embodiment A

[0127] Embodiment A is an article comprising:

[0128] An organic polymer having a plurality of side groups comprising:

[0129] comprising a first side group of a first quaternary ammonium component;

[0130] a second side group containing a non-polar component;

[0131] comprising a third pendant group of the first organosilane component; and

[0132] a touch-sensitive substrate comprising a surface;

[0133] wherein said organic polymer is attached to said surface.

[0134] Embodiment B is the article of embodiment A, further comprising a silicon substrate comprising a first side and a second side, wherein the organic polymer is attached to the first side of the silicon substrate, and wherein the touch-sensitive substrate is attached to the silicon substrate. The second side of the substrate.

[0135] Embodiment C is the article of embodiment A or embodiment B, wherein the article does not comprise a conductive layer.

Embodiment D

[0136] Embodiment D is the article of any of the preceding embodiments, wherein the organic polymer further comprises a second quaternary ammonium component.

[0137] Embodiment E is the article of any of the preceding embodiments, wherein the organic polymer further comprises a second organosilane component.

[0138] Embodiment F is the article of embodiment E, wherein the second organosilane component comprises an alkyl halide.

[0139] Embodiment G is the article of any of the preceding examples, wherein in the organic polymer, the number of N atoms associated with the first quaternary ammonium component and the second quaternary ammonium component (if present) is equal to that of the first organosilane The ratio of the number of Si atoms associated with the component and the second organosilane component (if present) is from about 0.1:1 to about 10:1.

[0140] Embodiment H is the article of any of the preceding embodiments, wherein at least one of the side group component...

Embodiment BB

[0174] Embodiment BB is a method of making a coated article comprising:

[0175] forming a first composition of an organic polymer in an organic solvent, the polymer having a plurality of side groups comprising:

[0176] comprising a first side group of a first quaternary ammonium component;

[0177] a second pendant group comprising a non-polar component; and

[0178] comprising a third pendant group of the first organosilane component;

[0179] mixing the second quaternary ammonium component with the first composition to form a first mixture; and

[0180] The first mixture is contacted with the touch-sensitive substrate under conditions suitable to form a covalent bond between the organic polymer and the touch-sensitive substrate.

[0181] Embodiment CC is the method of embodiment BB, wherein forming the first mixture further comprises forming the first mixture comprising the catalyst compound.

[0182] Embodiment DD is the method of embodiment BB or embodiment CC, where...

The polymers include a first pendant group comprising a first quaternary ammonium component, a second pendant group comprising a nonpolar component, and a third pendant group comprising an organosilane component. The disclosure also includes methods of coating articles with the antimicrobial polymers. The methods further include the use of adhesion-promoting reagents.

Description

[0001] Cross references to related patent applications [0002] This application claims priority to US Provisional Patent Application Nos. 61 / 348,044 and 61 / 348,157, both filed May 25, 2010, which are hereby incorporated by reference in their entirety. Background technique [0003] Thus, surfaces intended to be touched by human operators will be exposed to microorganisms commonly or incidentally found on the skin. For example, touch panels can be found in applications ranging from ATMs to casinos to point-of-sale terminals and portable computers. Since data entry is based on contact, touch panels are inherently prone to scratches and microbial contamination. Surfaces that can be easily contaminated include countertops, bed rails, writing utensils, and keypads. [0004] These surfaces provide suitable habitats for bacteria, fungi, algae, and other single-celled organisms that thrive and multiply based on the appropriate amount of moisture, temperature, nutrients, and availab...
