Embodiment 1

[0100] Example 1: Programming of lipid globule structure on plasma cholesterol levels later in life

[0101] Prepare infant formula milk in a method similar to Example 1B of WO2010 / 0027258

[0102] 1) Control IMF: This diet included 255 g lipid per kg dry weight. Lipid globules are small. No polar lipids are added. Lipids comprise about 47% of total calories digestible carbohydrates, about 45 and about 8% of total calories protein.

[0103] 2) IMF of the present invention comprising large lipid globules: no polar lipids are added.

[0104] 3) IMF of the present invention: This diet differs from diet 2 in that it contains phospholipids which are added to the powdered IMF by dry mixing. The phospholipids are not present as a coating around the lipid globule.

[0105] 4) IMF according to the invention: This diet differs from diet 3 in that the phospholipids are present as a coating around the lipid globules.

[0106] The difference in lipid globule size was obtained by th...

Embodiment 2

[0116] Example 2: Lipid globule structure programming of plasma cholesterol levels later in life

[0117] The experiment of Example 1 was repeated with a diet similar to Diets 1 and 4 of Example 1. Wistar rats were used instead of mice. Blood was analyzed not at day 98, but at day 42 (direct diet effect) and day 130 (late life, programming effect). The amount of phospholipids in diet 4 was 1.6% by weight based on total fat (0.11% by weight in diet 1). The amount of cholesterol in Diet 4 was 0.03% by weight based on total fat. Linoleic acid and α-linolenic acid in diets 1 and 4 were the same as in Example 1. Diet 1 lipid globules had a volume mode diameter of 0.5 μm. Less than 10% by volume is between 2-12 μm in diameter. Diet 4 lipid globules had a volume mode diameter of 1.7 μm. More than 45% by volume is between 2-12 μm in diameter.

[0118] Table 2: Total blood cholesterol levels and triglyceride levels (mmol / l) on days 42 and 130 in rats exposed to different diets...

Abstract

The invention relates to infant nutrition comprising large lipid globules. This infant nutrition has programming effects on the body and results in a reduced level of total blood cholesterol later in life when consuming a Western style diet. Thereby the risk on western life style diseases as atherosclerosis and other vascular diseases later in life can be reduced.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention is in the field of infant nutrition, especially the effect of early life nutrition on later life health. Background technique [0002] Breastfeeding is the preferred method of feeding babies. However, there are situations where breastfeeding is not possible or is not ideal. In these cases, infant formula is a good alternative. The composition of modern infant formulas is varied to meet the many specific nutritional needs of rapidly growing and developing infants. It appears that improvements can still be made in the composition of infant formula. [0003] Breast milk contains lipid droplets up to 10 times larger in size than infant formula. Later in life, it appears that subjects who were breastfed early in life had lower blood cholesterol levels in adulthood than infants who were bottle fed (Marmot, 1980, J Epid. Comm Health 34:164-167; Owen, 2006 Pediatrics 110:597-608). This could explain the increased risk of atheroscler...
