The invention discloses a method for reducing the content of heavy metals in sunflower seeds. The method comprises thefollowing steps: adding biochar to soil contaminated by the heavy metals, mixing evenly and planting sunflowers so as to reduce the content of the heavy metals in the sunflower seeds after maturation of the sunflowers. The method disclosed in the invention can be used for significantly reducing the accumulation of lead, cadmium, and arsenic in the sunflower seeds in a field by applying biochar. Compared with a method that no biochar is added, by using the method, the content ofthe heavy metals, such as lead, cadmium, and arsenic, in the sunflower seeds can be reduced significantly by about 80%, 40%, and 50%, respectively.
