Abstract

A liquid antimicrobial composition is provided for use in disinfecting the skin of a human or animal, in particular when a drug tolerant organism is required to be disinfected. The composition comprises a cationic microbicide that disrupts a cell membrane and a cationic branched polymer capable of inhibiting the efflux pump mechanism of the cell membrane. The cell membrane disrupting cationic microbicide is preferably any one or a combination of chlorhexidine, polymeric biguanide, octenidine dihydrochloride, and a quaternary ammonium compound. The branched polymers provided are capable of binding and disrupting cell membranes of microorganisms, inhibiting or disrupting efflux pump mechanisms of cells, thereby preventing microbial strains from producing tolerance to increasingly prevalent cell membrane disrupting cationic microbicides, especially when the microbicides comprise chlorhexidine. The branched polymer is preferably any one of, or a combination thereof, a 0-to 3-generation branched polymer comprising a poly (propylene imine) functionalized quaternary ammonium, a polylysine, a branched polymer having a sugar-based surface group, and a polyamidoamine (PAMAM) branched polymer. The composition is preferably in the form of an aqueous or hydroalcoholic solution, dispersion or emulsion that can be adsorbed by the wipe.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to liquid antimicrobial compositions, in particular compositions for use in skin disinfection of humans or animals where disinfection of drug-resistant organisms may be required. Background technique [0002] The skin needs to be disinfected before surgery to break the skin barrier and allow the entry of microorganisms that could lead to infection. These microorganisms can be external contaminants from the environment or equipment, or can be normal commensal skin colonies that, while harmless in normal external situations, can cause serious infections in the body. It would also be beneficial to provide a method of cleaning and disinfecting the skin of hospital patients who cannot bathe or shower. [0003] Many agents have been used on the skin for these purposes. In the past, calcium chloride and other chlorine-donating chemicals have been used, but these substances are highly aggressive and damage the skin. Recently, r...
