Abstract

A plastic optical fiber (POF) (11) was formed having PMMA as a main component. Elastomeric polyurethane (13) hardened at 80°C is contained in a resin tank (12). When the POF (11) is fed through the resin tank (12), the elastomeric polyurethane (13) overlies the POF (11) to form a cladding line (15). The cladding wire (15) is conveyed to a water tank (17) whose temperature is adjusted to 80°C. The elastomer passing through the water channel (17) hardened to become a protective layer with a thickness of 450 μm. Since the POF (11) is heated to 80° C. during processing to form a protective layer, the POF (11) does not transform. Therefore, influence on optical characteristics can be prevented. Furthermore, the protective layer has sufficient mechanical strength.
