Embodiment

[0047] Gas diffusion electrodes have been fabricated and tested according to the method of the present invention. A gas diffusion electrode consists of two layers, the active layer and the gas diffusion layer. In addition, woven, etched or wire meshes are pressed or rolled into the gas diffusion electrodes.

[0048] Figure 2 shows the catalytic activity of two gas diffusion electrodes, one of which contains a noble metal catalyst and the other does not contain a noble metal catalyst. Electrodes have been prepared according to the method described in the present invention. Electrodes without noble metal catalysts were prepared using 15wt% PTFE and 85wt% high surface area graphite, the surface area of the graphite must be greater than 100m 2 / g. In order for the electrodes to have a long service life, it is necessary to use graphite instead of high surface area activated carbon, however some forms of activated carbon may also be used.

Abstract

A method for the production of a gas diffusion electrode is described, and especially a method for producing a plastic bounded thin gas diffusion electrode with high catalytic activity for the oxygen or the hydrogen reaction. The method comprising the following steps: agglomerating a powder mixture with PTFE particles in a dry form to produce a dry agglomerate; adding an organic solvent to the dry agglomerate to produce a paste; calendering the paste into a thin sheet with a thickness less than 1 mm, to form an active layer or gas diffusion layer, in which one or both contain a current collector; and combining said active layer and said gas diffusion layer to form the gas diffusion electrode. The gas diffusion electrode thus produced may be used for example in fuel cells, metal-air batteries or membranes.

Description

technical field [0001] The invention relates to a method and a device for producing a gas diffusion electrode, and also describes the use of the electrode. In a specific embodiment, the electrode is a plastic bonded thin gas diffusion electrode, which has high catalytic activity for oxygen or hydrogen reactions. Background technique [0002] Gas diffusion electrodes have been developed for a number of fuel cell applications and for metal-air battery systems. The most commonly used electrodes are based on polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and activated carbon. High surface area carbons are used as supports for noble metal or non-noble metal catalysts. Alternatively, an unsupported catalyst can be distributed within the electrode. PTFE holds the electrodes together and increases the hydrophobicity of this electrode to prevent liquid from flowing into the channels used for gas transmission. Metal meshes are often present in electrodes as current collectors and / or for mechanica...
