Piezo ignition is a type of ignition that is used in portable camping stoves, gas grills and some lighters, and potato cannons. Piezo ignition uses the principle of piezoelectricity, which, in short, is the electric charge that accumulates in some materials in response to high pressure. It consists of a small, spring-loaded hammer which, when a button is pressed, hits a crystal of PZT or quartz crystal. Quartz is piezoelectric, which means that it creates a voltage when deformed. This sudden forceful deformation produces a high voltage and subsequent electrical discharge, which ignites the gas.

A gas fueled lighter having a compact storage configuration so as to be easily carried in a pocket or purse, the lighter actuated by sliding a longitudinal portion engaged to the body so as to extend said portion to form an extension having a free end, the free end configured to initiate a flame upon full extension from the body, the flame fueled by gas in the body and ignited by a piezo ignition switch. The preferred embodiment of the present invention is designed to provide an inexpensive, compact, easy to implement lighter providing the flame from an extension when in use, the extension sliding back to form a portion of the body when not in use. This safety feature not only provides a flame extended from the user's hand and body, it also provides an extension for lighting pilot lights, gas grills, fireplaces, and the like. The body of the preferred embodiment has a gas reservoir therein as well as the ignition and fuel valve, and further has a generally rectilinear configuration with at least a portion of the top configured to slide longitudinally to form the extension, the upper face of the top including a frictional area for placement of the user's thumb thereupon for sliding of the extension and initiation / cessation of the flame. The body may be rubberized for a better grip, and may include finger ridges for an enhanced grip of the system, and the overall body ideally has an ergometric design to facilitate comfortable and tactile operation.

The device comprises a piezoelectric igniter, a load, a probe, a display, a standard resistanceinput module, a single chip microcomputer, and an amplifier; the piezoelectric igniter is connected with the load; one end of the load contacts the probe, and the other end of the load is grounded; the probe contacts the load; the probe is connected to the amplifier; and the amplifier, the probe, the display, and the standard resistance input module are connected to the single chip microcomputer.The piezoelectric igniter discharges a pulse current of 12V to its load, the load is grounded, the probe contacts the load; the principle of charging by induction is used, the current generated by theprobe through the induction is amplified by the amplifier and then flows through the single chip microcomputer, and the single chip microcomputer calculates and analyzes voltage and current information to obtain the resistance value of the load, and the resistance value and the standard resistance value input by the standard resistance input module are compared, and in this way, the leakage or aging of the load is measured and displayed on the display screen.
