[0089] Clause 1. A photodetector comprising:

[0090] Substrates made of doped germanium;

[0091] a mesa structure made of doped epitaxial germanium grown on top of a substrate, wherein the doped epitaxial germanium has a doping density less than that of doped germanium;

[0092] a metal film made of metal deposited on top of the mesa structure;

[0093] a metal pad made of metal deposited on top of the mesa structure and in contact with the membrane; and

[0094] An ohmic contact layer made of metal deposited on the bottom of the substrate.

[0095] Item 2. The photodetector according to Item 1, wherein the metal film and the metal pad are made of a metal selected from gold, silver, aluminum, copper, and indium.

[0096] Clause 3. The photodetector of Clause 2, wherein the metal film and the mesa structure form a junction having a Schottky barrier height in the range of 0.54 to 0.64 volts.

[0097] Clause 4. The photodetector of Clause 1, further comprising a voltage sou...

Abstract

The invention relates to a universal broadband photodetector design and a fabrication process. The broad-spectral-bandwidth photodetector designed for use with all types of optical fibers used in different avionics networks and sensors and a process for fabricating such photodetectors. A Schottky barrier photodetector is provided that includes germanium, which has a broad spectral response to light in the ultraviolet to near-infrared range (220 to 1600 nm). The provision of a photodetector having a broad spectral response avoids the use of multiple different types of photodetectors and receivers in an avionics platform with different optical fiber networks and sensors.

Description

technical field [0001] The technology disclosed herein generally relates to fiber optic networks that enable communication between electrical components. Compared to copper networks, fiber optic networks have the advantages of higher speed, lower weight and immunity to electromagnetic interference. Many models of commercial aircraft have fiber optic networks to reduce size, weight and power. Background technique [0002] Optical networks using plastic optical fibers (POF) offer advantages over copper wires in terms of weight, size, bandwidth, power, and EMI immunity. Plastic optical fiber has advantages over glass optical fiber (GOF) in terms of ease of handling, installation and maintenance. Significant weight savings can result from the use of POF. Weight reduction can be important for networks on vehicles such as aircraft, where weight reduction can lead to reduced fuel consumption and reduced emissions. [0003] Legacy avionics systems using GOF networks will also be...
