However, this will increase power consumption
[0021] While this prior art laser driver circuit 10 enables a single laser drive current pulse to be generated without ringing using a relatively simple design and with a sufficient safety margin, it cannot sufficiently reduce all The pulse width of the laser drive current produced, and for some purposes, cannot produce a laser drive current pulse as high as the desired pulse, and for some purposes, has a longer recovery time than desired

Abstract

The present disclosure relates to a laser driver including a clamp circuit having a freewheel diode. A circuit is provided that includes a capacitor coupled between a high voltage node and the ground;a laser diode having an anode coupled to the high voltage node and a cathode coupled to the output node; and a current source coupled between the output node and the ground. The current source is turned on based on assertion of the trigger signal and draws current from the capacitor to the ground, thereby resulting in laser diode lasing, and turning off the current source based on the de-assertion of the trigger signal. The clamp circuit is coupled between the output node and the high voltage node and clamps a voltage at the output node that occurs when the current source is turned off.

Description

technical field [0001] The present application relates to the field of laser driving, and in particular to a circuit for generating pulses with a desired pulse width ( A laser diode is driven based on this pulse). Background technique [0002] Time-of-flight ranging applications such as Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) utilize a laser diode (usually infrared) that is driven with a pulsed drive current to cause it to emit short laser pulses in a given direction. Laser pulses are reflected by (possible) objects in this given direction, and the receiver receives and reads the reflected laser pulses. The receiver measures the elapsed time between transmitting the laser pulse and receiving the reflected laser pulse with an appropriate time reference. Based on the elapsed time, the distance to the object can be estimated. [0003] In addition to the typical challenges associated with this technique (such as dark pulses, averaging received reflected pulses, and using post-pro...
