In fishkeeping, a sump is an accessory aquarium tank in which mechanical equipment is kept. A remote sump allows for a clutter-free display tank. It is found mainly in a reef aquarium or marine aquarium. The sump sits below, behind, or (less typically) on a support above the main tank, and is used as a filter, as well as a holding place for unsightly, miscellaneous equipment such as protein skimmers, calcium reactors, and heaters. The main advantage of having a sump plumbed into an aquarium is the increase of water volume in the system, making it more stable and less prone to fluctuations of pH and salinity, and also mitigating the effects of nutrient buildup or the unintentional introduction of foreign substances. In addition, some sumps have a compartment that can be converted into a refugium, helping to filter out excess nutrients such as nitrates.

An apparatus for cleaning liquid-filled tanks, e.g., aquariums, includes an inner cleaning assembly which moves across the interior wall of the tank and an outer cleaning assembly which moves across the exterior wall of the tank. The inner and outer cleaning assembly are magnetically attracted to each other so that manipulation of the outer cleaning assembly results in corresponding motion of the inner cleaning assembly. The inner cleaning assembly bears a cleaning pad which moves across the tank wall to clean matter therefrom. The inner cleaning assembly is buoyant so that interruption of the magnetic engagement between the inner and outer cleaning assemblies results in the inner cleaning assembly floating to the top of the liquid-filled tank for easier retrieval. The invention provides a control system of an aquarium illuminating system, wherein a motor driver changes the relative inclination degrees of light sources related to ornaments in an aquarium with the passage of time, so that incident light falling onto the ornaments more accurately simulates natural light of the sun which moves every day and moves seasonally. Besides relative change of the inclination degrees, the power setting of the light sources can be further adjusted so as to further simulate the effect caused by changes of climates and / or weather every day. Therefore, the system eliminates regions filled with excessive light (the light further can promote growth of unnecessary algae) from the light sources erected in a single fixed position in the aquarium, and saturation of the excessive light means that light from the light sources in the single fixed position penetrates downward into the deep part of the aquarium.
