Embodiment Construction

[0024] Reference will now be made in detail to embodiments of the invention, examples of which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings. Wherever possible, reference numbers by way of example will be used throughout the drawings to refer to the same or like parts. Although described in relation to electrochemical cells using hydrogen, oxygen, and water, it should be understood that the devices and methods of the present invention can be used with various types of electrochemical cells, including those operating at high differential pressures.

[0025] figure 2 An exploded schematic of the electrochemical cell 200 is shown. The electrochemical cell 200 can include two bipolar plates 210 , 220 . The two bipolar plates 210, 220 can act as support plates and conductors. The bipolar plates 210 , 220 can also include access channels for circulating a cooling fluid (ie, water, glycol, or a water glycol mixture) to remove heat from the electrochemical cell 200 . The bipolar p...

Abstract

A flow field for use in an electrochemical cell is disclosed herein. The flow field includes a porous metal structure including an air inlet and a plurality of channels stamped into the structure. A plurality of channels are in fluid communication with the gas inlet to receive the reactant gas and are configured to diffuse the reactant gas between adjacent channels through the porous metal structure.

Description

[0001] This application claims the benefit of US Provisional Application No. 62 / 017,943, filed June 27, 2014, which is incorporated by reference in its entirety. technical field [0002] The present invention is directed to electrochemical cells and, more particularly, to the design of flow fields used in electrochemical cells. Background technique [0003] An electrochemical cell, often classified as a fuel cell or an electrolysis cell, is a device used to generate an electrical current from a chemical reaction or to use an electrical current to cause a chemical reaction. A fuel cell converts the chemical energy of a fuel (such as hydrogen, natural gas, methanol, gasoline, etc.) and an oxidant (air or oxygen) into electricity and waste products of heat and water. A basic fuel cell consists of a negatively charged anode, a positively charged cathode, and an ion-conducting material called an electrolyte. [0004] Different fuel cell technologies use different electrolyte mat...
