Problems solved by technology

[0006] While some formulations have been developed to help overcome some unmet needs, many commercial beverages induce a feeling of bloating or fullness that leads to discontinuation until the amount of fluid required for rehydration has been consumed

Embodiment 1

[0078] A drinkable beverage composition is prepared by mixing the following ingredients

[0079] Composition % (weight)

[0080] Juice Concentrate 4.0

[0081] *Green Tea Solids 0.35

[0082] Flavor enhancer 0.06

[0083] Sodium citrate 0.32

[0084] Ascorbic acid 0.01

[0085] Aspartame 0.01

[0086] Glucose 0.8

[0087] Water 94.45* Green Tea Solids contains about 8% caffeine and about 29% unoxidized flavanols. The final drinkable beverage has about 0.0275% caffeine and about 0.097% unoxidized flavanols.

[0088] Example II

[0089] A beverage composition is prepared by mixing the following ingredients:

[0090] Composition % (weight)

[0091] Juice 1.7

[0092] Juice concentrate 0.64

[0093] *Green tea extract 63

[0094] Lemon Lime Flavor Enhancer 0.3

Embodiment

[0103] A healthy human exposed to a temperature of about 105°F and 75% humidity for about 1 hour can consume 835 cc of the beverage prepared in Example 1. Dilation of the intracellular compartments can be measured using multi-frequency bioimpedance spectroscopy with a Xitron 4000B spectrometer (Xitron Technologies, Inc.). This measurement demonstrates that the compositions of the present invention are capable of significantly expanding intracellular water compartments compared to commercial beverages containing carbohydrates and electrolytes. This swelling generally becomes significant when the actual consumption is approximately equal to the amount the person loses through sweating during exposure to heat. This difference was statistically significant (p=0.051).

Abstract

This invention relates to a composition, preferably in the form of a beverage, whereby cellular hydration and drinkability are enhanced by the combination of green tea solids with selected levels and types of electrolytes and carbohydrates. The compositions comprise (a) from about 0.01 % to about 0.35 % flavanols; (b) from about 0.01 % to about 0.3 % sodium ions; (c) from about 0.005 % to about 0.08 % potassium ions; (d) from about 0.1 % to about 20 % of a carbohydrate which provides: (i) from about 0.05 % to about 10.0 % fructose; (ii) from about 0.05 % to about 10.0 % glucose; and (e) water.

Description

field of invention [0001] The present invention relates to a composition, particularly in the form of a beverage, for enhancing cellular hydration and drinkability by mixing green tea solids with selected amounts and types of electrolytes and carbohydrates. Background of the invention [0002] Moderate physical activity, prolonged training, or working in hot and humid environments can cause excessive loss of minerals and body fluids through sweating and respiration. Physical activities such as training, especially activities in a hot environment, cause a large amount of metabolic consumption in the human body. The heat generated during training is dissipated when you sweat. [0003] Dehydration, or a dehydrated state, can result from the loss of sweat from the body during exercise. Associated with dehydration is loss of body heat and decreased performance. Loss of water, electrolytes, and carbohydrate depletion are known to be major causes of fatigue that can impair work ...
