Abstract

The present invention discloses a method for recovering lithium from smelting slag, the method comprising the steps of: roasting spodumene to convert it from an alpha modification to a beta modification; reacting the variant with sulfuric acid; repulping the reaction product with water to form an acidic slurry; neutralizing the acidic slurry to a pH between 5 and 7 by adding at least one neutralizing agent; filtering the neutralized slurry, Lithium-containing solutions and residues are thereby obtained; the method is characterized in that lithium-containing smelting slag is added as a neutralizing agent in one or both of the steps of repulping and neutralizing the acidic slurry. The lithium-containing smelting slag is used to replace at least some of typical neutralizing agents. Lithium from the slag is liberated and added to the lithium evolved from the spodumene.
